I would like to share something that has worked well for us. This works best for kids who are about 3rd thru 6th grade. I do something called a "packet" for each days work. As much as is practical, all the papers they need for the days assignment will be in the packet. That means I rip out each days workbook page for each subject, and have it in the packet. If something else needs to be done on paper ( for example, write a paragraph, draw a picture, write an outline, etc) the paper I want them to do that on is in the packet. As much as possible, I try to place the days reading material in the packet but sometimes that is not possible.
Having the packet ready to go each day, with a checklist of assignments on the front, keeps the kids more focused and independent. Also, it is easier for me to check to see if they have really done their work for the day- I just look at the packet, instead of having to check in 4 different workbooks.
Another method that is very similar is I think called the Avillan system, I think a mom has posted about it on this site.

Don't you just love it when you come up with a system that works well for you and your kids? I have done something very similar, Setonmom. I actually started using the Avillan system then I switched to a filing system. The filing system is sort of like your packets, but it is set up for the entire year. It has been a lifesaver for me during times like illness, new babies, visiting grandparents, etc. I'm changing things a bit this year because my 2 older kids have so much less to actually file. I will continue to file, or do something similar, for my youngers though.
