Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm putting together my last year Freshman's grade report and am looking for advice on calculating his credits. From what I understand approx 120-180 hours equals 1 credit. Now, he spends double that or more on his piano between practicing and performances. Can I give him 2 credits for "Piano study and Performance" then? this is most likely what he will go to college for and so I want to do it right. Thanks for your advice!

I'm not sure what other people do, but we follow our umbrella school's policy, which is that 120 hours counts as one credit, and hours beyond that are not counted toward additional credit hours for that year.

(I have "held over" hours for future years on occasion, but now, with dd dancing 5-7 days per week, there's no reason to do that.)

If your son has lots of performance time, enough to add up to, say, 1/4 credit (30 hours), you could separate piano study from piano performance in order to reflect the amount of time he spends on each.

I'll be interested to learn what other people do, because my dd certainly had plenty of "extra" dance hours this year!

I would suggest something similar - not so much "two credits" in the same thing for the year (though in the public school that is not unheard of) - but two credits in two separate areas.

One could be "Performance" - the other could be "Theory and Technique" or something along those lines - whatever makes the most sense for what he did.

Or if he performed pieces that could be categorized into two genres, perhaps split it up that way?

My suggestion would be similar to CatholicMommy's....consider breaking up the two credits (piano and performance) into two different areas for assigning credits.

I'd probably take a look at some sample transcripts from students that followed similar paths with a similar trajectory (looking to pursue music in college) in order to look for appropriate names for transcript packaging purposes. Another direction for this is to do some searching and find a listing of arts/music courses offered by high schools in your area and consider assigning one of those names on the transcript. Finding some samples and examples could help you so that you can give him credit for work completed in this area while packaging it in recognizable terms.

I'd say the same. You don't want your transcript to look padded with credits; on the other hand, you understandably want to demonstrate the level of your son's work and commitment. The idea of breaking down areas of work -- performance, theory, and so on -- sounds like a good way to acknowledge those hours. You could even consider something like "Music Appreciation" to acknowledge hours spent learning about composers, periods in music history, genres and styles, etc. Over the course of his high-school career, if he's playing steadily and adding new pieces, he'll probably rack up hours in that area as well, so that eventually you could count it as its own "class."

Thanks for your ideas, ladies. I'll break it down into 2 courses. I thought ahead for this year and added a music history .25 credit to his regular history as he will spend his Friday's researching and blogging about musicians through history...this will work very well with his world history this year and it will give him credit for all the time he spends listening to different composers online.
