Hi there, I know it's been a *while* since I've been active here, so "Hi everyone" and I've missed you, but life goes it's own course, and here I am again, checking in on my 4real friends
So, who has a 13yo son right now and what pray-tell are you doing with them for school?? Mine is a VERY techie, over-achiever that is LAZY in all things NOT computer related, ie. writing, reading (unless it's not assigned) latin (hates) but is an avid and devoted Latin Tridentine Mass Acolyte with his 2nd brother and can speak more Latin than I could ever hope to He is also a baseball afficionado (sp?) and is always the first to entertain his littlest brother when duty calls (he also shares a room with said sibling, a calling that will lead him to sainthood, imho )
That being said, I'm fumbling and waffling as to where to lead him beyond this year, which is tween-ness right now. He's doing Geometry with his older sister , online computer classes that are highschool level, and various other unschooly type activities...
Any input as I'm planning for next year would be welcomed!
God Bless you all for this great forum,
Meredith

Hi Meredith, so nice to see you. Since you haven't been here in a while I thought I'd point you to the 9th Grade Planning Thread over on the High School Years and Beyond forum. I guess your son might only be in 8th grade but I thought it might have some good ideas. And so you don't feel alone in mothering these newly teenage boys.. you might want to check out the thread on teenagers in the Mothering and Family Life Forum.
My oldest son is 13 and I haven't really started much thinking yet Keeping on with the math and language arts stuff.. might add in Spanish.. maybe Latin. I'd like to but we'll have to see. He's in the midst of starting his Eagle project for Boy Scouts so we're not thinking ahead to next year too much right now. He's super into Boy Scouts (and not just to get his Eagle) and is starting to get involved with the Mountain Man Rendezvous (black powder shooting etc) with grandma and hunting this fall with dad.
I'm personally hoping to motivate him toward the garden

This is a great time to do some college research: visit websites, write for catalogs, start thinking about where he envisions himself in five years, doing what . . . I've found this exercise to be tremendously motivating to my young teenagers, because it gives some context and direction to what they're doing now.
It's also a good time to consider what he might be doing for high-school credit in the next year. Obviously you could count the geometry, if it's the equivalent of a year's high-school coursework. The first year of a foreign language -- maybe not Latin, if he really hates it and has already acquired a lot via studies and Latin Mass participation? The computer classes as electives? That in itself can be motivating, to realize that he's already earning credits that will go on his high-school transcript and help him towards whatever goals he might formulate at this point. Those goals may change a lot in the next few years, but they make a really good starting point.
Here's a sketchy outline of what my 8th-grader did this year; here's a peek at our plans for next year.
Hope this helps!
Sally

Thanks Jodie and Sally for the links and thoughts, I will peruse some of this over the weekend and start formulating a plan. He's such a good kid, I really don't push him too hard as he's a *young* 8th grader, won't be 14 until the fall, so he's truly in between grades age-wise according to "regular" school rubrics, but since we don't follow those in the least, he's got a pretty good set up
Anyhoo, thanks again and many blessings,
Meredith

Meredith, so good to see you!
I have a 13yo boy going into 8th grade. If you want to chat about how to make baseball "count", I'm your girl .
Love,

Well, we probably have enough PE credits to enter college with all my kids combined!
I would LOVE to hear how you incorporate baseball into your school day, etc. Thanks!

Hi Meredith!
I have a 13 year old boy. He is tough, that's for sure. I can't stay and chat as I came to look something up quickly, but it is so nice to see you. I was on your blog for the first time in forever the other night.
Sorry, not adding anything to this conversation......
