Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So, if you were making a list to carry in your purse to yard sales/book sales, what authors would be your top 10-20? Specifically for early-late elementary books across all genres, subjects.

I'm so new to this that I only have a few that I keep an eye out for are:

Henri Fabre
Nesbit
Boxcar series
Sir Cumference
I watch for books in different subject areas, but not specific authors.

Who makes your top list?

Hoo boy, Lara, I couldn't sum up top 20. I was making a list of authors for book sale hunting and came up with 80, and I realized I had not even included the names from some of Yesterday's Classics or some authors consistently used in Ambleside.

I'd be happy to share that list. Every time I think I can pick a top 10, I think of another favorite author.

I also look at series and publishers. Grab anything printed by Bethlehem Books, for example. But all those authors are also on my to look for list, since many books are reprinted.

This might sound odd, but I have a book tote that goes in/out of my car or stays in the car. In it I have a file folder with the Ambleside books list printed (I think I got this a while ago from one of the AO yahoo groups), usually my planning notebook with booklists that I've been working on (for our next year's subjects to study) that comes from various sources, and you might even find some catalogs like Veritas Press in there.

After a while those names just kind of get engraved in your mind and you start recognizing authors or publishers. So like Jenn, it's hard to start listing favorites because it starts getting pretty long.

And of course, CM's best rule of thumb for me: read a few pages myself and I should be able to tell if it is a living book that my kids will enjoy. I've found books this way that have turned out to be real gems and worthy additions to our library.

Hard question, I am blessed with a wacky mind so I retain all author's names in my head. I see an author and I then can catalogue their 'value'.

I have authors 'sorted' into categories; Australian authors, Faith, Nature etc. What subject areas are you wanting to build up first?

I love you, Erin!!!!

I work the same way - same wacky mind!

I'll try to extract a list from my mind in a little bit though.

Yesterday our librarian rang, they were trying to track down books that I had reserved and had gone missing(it turns out they had put them on one of our other cards than the one reserved on). The librarian thought this may be the case and was trying to give me the book titles to check, I said, "What was the author?" as soon as she told me I knew I had the books. For some reason my mind works backwards.

I'm the same way! I think in authors, then subcategorize in titles.

But I'm always finding new authors, especially here, so I was "cramming" for a big used booksale.

Doesn't sound odd at all, Jenny. Maybe it's because I have a few lists that I compiled into a little book that I bound with Proclick to carry with me?
