Years ago, someone videotaped an educational show for me. It was called "A Christmas Calendar" and it was about Christmas traditions in Germany (starring Loretta Swift). It was made in 1987 and apparently is unavailable to buy on VHS or DVD.

I did not think that I had this anymore but happpened to find it in our basement today. Can I watch it? Can I keep it? Or do I legally just need to throuw it out?

I have thought about this show from time to time over the years as I enjoyed it very much, but I do not want to commit a sin over it, obviously.

I would watch it. If it isn't available for purchase, I don't think you are doing anything wrong.

I do not believe you are doing anything wrong. If you make copies and sell them, then you are doing something wrong! If you are using it for personal enjoyment or gain, then it is all good. If you copy it and give it to someone, that could be infringement, but if you lend it to someone and they make a copy of it without your knowledge, then you are still good! Have I confused you?

Just know that as long as you use it for your own enjoyment, it is good. If you copy it and sell it, you'll be in trouble.

On another note, did you search for it on YouTube? If it is there, then you could watch it from your computer!

Copyright law allows you to make a video copy of a TV show for personal use only (as it allows you to make a backup copy of music CDs or software, again for personal use only).

I would watch it, too, especially since you've made a good-faith effort to find it for purchase and can't.
