Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anybody feel like helping me out here? I'd love a list of things you do w/ your early elem. kids. Something along the lines of relaxed and fun, but clearly educational. I'm hoping for as much independence as possible, too. He needs more options during quiet/down time.

If you know of any specific programs/sites for computer or ipad (which I think we will be getting), that would be great! All media welcome.

So far, we do:
Leapster Explorer-our best games right now are Star Wars Jedi Reading & Mr. Pencil. Many of the rest of them are more brain candy
Netflix-documentaries

We use a lot of the Bill Nye and Schlessinger media dvd's. Fortunately one local library here has a TON of them on virtually every subject under the sun (science, math, history). Worth checking your library for those.

Oh...our current Netflix choices are the "How stuff is Made". I think there are 5-6 in the series and they're 60 minutes. The first two are corn and then salt. We haven't done the others yet.

- Documentaries on Netflix or from our DVD collection.

- iPod/iPad apps:
- Rocket Math
- Starfall ABC
- Art
- Bob Books
- Stack the States
- Stack the Countries

- Computer programs/websites
- Sheppard's Software
- Starfall
- Teaching Textbooks 3 (yes, my kids think this is a video game. I am not trying to change their minds!)

- Books (my kids really like 'fact' books that have lots of random information and since we don't use those very often in school, it's more of a leisure activity for them to spend time reading them.)
- I Love Math series of books
- Usborne Time Traveler
- Magazines from the Cricket Group
- Dinosaurs: A Visual Encyclopedia
- Any other Usborne books
- The New Way Things Work

My hands-down favorite for that age is Starfall.com
Also, any of the Leap Frog videos are great, but Letter Factory is the favorite.
Leapster--Jedi Math is pretty good.

I ditto Starfall. In their paid-subscription "area," they have lots of great early math games, as well as phonics. Might or might not be worth the money; the free phonics stuff is still fabulous.

My kids like Magic Schoolbus videos as well as Bill Nye.

We have also really liked math workbooks with interactive CDs from Schoolzone.com. The workbooks are just your basic rather twaddly (but my kids like them) skills review, but my kids have loved "playing" the CDs. We just got a 3rd-grade book/CD as a winter-blues beater, and both kids got up early this morning to "play" it, "play" meaning to work through increasingly difficult addition activities.
