Navigating the world of e-books can be overwhelming. I thought we could start a list of great finds for freebies (or cheapies  ) for kindle (or iBooks, Nook, etc...).
I think I paid $2 for the complete works of G. K. Chesterton for Kindle 
Some more great finds to share?

There are TONS!!!!
My favorite finds that are homeschooling related:
Many Thornton Burgess books.
Many Charles Morris Historical Tales
Lots of historical fiction such as Henty, Baldwin, Pyle and Seton
All of the Lang Fairy books (Blue fairy book, red, yellow, etc)as well as Grimm bros and more.
Lots of Frank L Baum, Louisa May Alcott, and Edith Nesbit
A Child's Geography.
so, so, so many good things!
And all free!

Thanks, Theresa! I'm always thinking I want to download something free to read, and then I sort of freeze up and can't think of anything, lol. I'm hoping to have a thread to browse next time the mood strikes

Ok, here is my tip for finding freebies on Amazon.
Search (within the Kindle store)for a novel you know you like (say Pride and Prejudice).
Then scroll down and look at the horizontal scroll bar that says "Customers who bought this also bought..." and there will be 20 recommendations for similar titles (all free). Then click on one, follow that trail, and just keep doing that to get more and more recommendations. You'll have a large collection in no time!

We just got a kindle. I frittered for so long over whether or not I even wanted an ereader...anyway, I made the jump recently and I'm very pleased...we're all really, really enjoying it. I mainly got it for the kids free reading, but I confess I too am finding I enjoy the accessibility to some books I didn't have before. I think the kindle will be a very useful tool for us.
I downloaded Charlotte Mason: In Memoriam and have been reading it on the kindle! It's a hard book to track down affordably (at least I haven't found one affordable...yet) and this book has some fantastic CM insight from those that loved her and used her methods!
Our library system is not good at all and my children are voracious readers. This is one of the biggest reasons I decided to try a kindle - because the sheer number of (great) books out there in the public domain is staggering.
Gutenberg - Children's Book Series - these are just fantastic!! My son is really enjoying THE BOY ALLIES series right now.
Gutenberg - Children's Fiction
Gutenberg - Children's History
Gutenberg - Children's Literature
Gutenberg - Children's Periodicals
I've been enjoying some of the Botany selections from Gutenberg as well.
My daughter enjoyed Handicrafts for Girls so much that we ended up hunting it down in paper form. It's an excellent instructional book for young ladies (and their moms)!
We're just getting started, so I'm glad to have a thread to come back to for checking out new titles.

Mobile Read forums Click on E-books, then choose what format you are looking for. You can even set it to send you a list of the latest uploads periodically.
University of Adelaide - I think I got the entire Dickens collection here free.
The complete works of George MacDonald
E-book mall a variety of low-priced stuff. I haven't tried it myself and it doesnt' seem to have epub, which is the preferred format for my Sony reader; however, a few minutes with Calibre will take care of format issues. (free e-library software)
I can't recall now which site in particular but I've downloaded all of the Anne of Green Gables series, as well as many of Gene Stratton-Porter's books, for free. I probably use the mobileread, gutenberg and adelaide sites the most for free stuff.
Also, Pixel of Ink is a blog which highlights the free and cheap e-books available, mostly for Kindle, each day and you can get it sent to your email box. I always check out the freebies at Kindle, even though I have a sony, b/c you can use the free Kindle for PC to read them.

http://www.gutenberg.org is a great place to get free e-reader books. (Even the complete works of Shakespeare!!!!!)
Not free, but I also got Angel Food for Boys and Girls (all four volumes) for $11.97 - which is much better than the $60+ to get the actual books. Lots of inexpensive treasures on this site: http://vintagecatholic.com/books/.

Oh, forgot to mention another great find.
A Wizard of Oz Collection including 15 books is only 95c on Amazon. I am almost through the first book. Great for read-aloud to kids, or for independent readers ages 8 and up.

Jen, how do I send Charlotte Mason In Memoriam to my Kindle? I clicked "kindle" and it downloaded to my computer. I don't know how to transfer it. Do you?

There might be another (better/easier) way, Mary Alice, I'm *just* learning....but I downloaded it to my desktop just like you, and then:
** plugged my kindle into my laptop via the usb cable
** dragged the file right onto the kindle from my desktop
** make sure it's in your DOCUMENTS folder on your kindle or you won't be able to read it.
...unplug the kindle and you should be able to see it and read.

Free download:
Type Lessons for Primary Teachers in the Study of Nature, Literature and Art by Anna McGovern
This book is very similar to a favorite book we have: Nature Study and Related Literature by the same author, published 1902.
I highly recommend both books. A side by side comparison of the table of contents of both books reveals that they are nearly identical in their contents. There are some wonderful seasonal nature study lessons, and the book contains an excellent selection of seasonal poetry!

I just found two Charles Morris books (Child's Story of America and Child's Story of the Nations) today at a little yard sale -- delightful reading! His name wasn't ringing a bell, though, so I had to look him up.

Yes, most definitely. I think Simply Charlotte Mason has compiled some American history books with most of this text.
The Online Books Page lists quite a few titles.
The Child's Story of Our Country from Earliest Times to Present Day (also available Hathi Trust)is the one I found...I had the incorrect title. But this is also the same as The Child's History of the United States.
The other book is entitled The Child's Story of the Nations which was printed also as The Child's Story of the Greatest Century (also here. Since it was published in 1901, the century would be 1800-1900. It's so interesting to see the depiction of these "great" inventions that changed the world, and also the big events of that century.

Just a quick note to point everyone to Homeschool Freebie of the Day. I have gotten so many great PDF books from them. Peter and Polly in Autumn, Days and Deeds 100 Years Ago (that is a really nice book. Charming). Today they have Broad Stripes and Bright Stars.
So far the PDFs that I have got from that site have been very readable on my Kindle.
