So I know my days would run SO much smoother if I got my butt out of bed before dd did. I would love to get up about an hour before she gets up, she usually gets up around 7, so 6 or so. I dunno how to make myself get up earlier. I tried setting an alarm, try getting to be early enough to get a decent amount of sleep but I just can't find the motivation to get myself up and moving if I don't have to be somewhere. How do you do it?

start with smaller increments.. it's HARD to get up an hour early.. but 10 minutes.. 15 minutes early.. that's not bad.. and then you have a bit of time before your daughter wakes up to enjoy.. and then after a few days getting up a bit earlier than that can be easier.. again isn't only a tiny bit earlier but you'll also have the excitment of having enjoyed that time already and know in a more immediate way that it'll be worth it.

It's a mortification for me - simple as that. I don't like it. I'm not a morning person, but the plain fact is, my family gets up early so I get up earlier. I gotta do it, so I do.
It's imperative that I get to bed early - which is yet another act of self-discipline. I can't get up early if I go to bed late (which is definitely my preference...I'm a night owl by nature). I had to experiment a little to find the time I needed to regularly go to bed in order to get up early and still feel rested enough to keep up with the daily duties.
I don't have anything catchy or exciting for you to try. Sorry. It's one of those things I don't like to do, so I give myself the ole' "buckle up buttercup" interior motivational speech and JUST DO IT!
Good luck!

yes the increments only help to get started.. after that you'll probably just have to stick to Jen's method.

It helps to do a little-something that you look forward to...AS SOON AS your feet touch the ground.
::Some people look forward to that cup of coffee.
::Some people enjoy doing a no-brainer-chore.
::Or sitting somewhere for a couple minutes.
My dad gets up and sits and watches his bird-feeder for a couple minutes...he enjoys it so it gives him motivation to get up.
My husband is always SO HUNGRY when he gets up in the morning, that he HAS to get up!!! And, I've done that too when I go through periods where I'm slacking on getting up when I'm supposed to.....make sure to decrease my food at dinner or eat earlier, so that I'm SO HUNGRY that I just POP out of bed just to get an English muffin! (whatever it takes, i guess!)
And, it helps if you have something you really enjoy for breakfast. I just LOVE my english-muffin-and-orange-marmalade-with-coffee (consumed in quiet) SO MUCH that it helps me to get out of bed.
My husband also helps me when he's in town....I tell him the night before...."Make sure I'm up by X:00 or you're in getting rice-and-canned-peaches for dinner!"
But, yeah....it's def. a "just gotta do it" kinda thing. And, my discipline is more about getting to bed at a decent hour.

Suzanne beat me to it but i was going to say the same thing. Find something that you want to do in the morning WITHOUT the kids around. For me it is something different in each season of life. Sometimes a dark quiet moment to light that great smelling candle, sometimes the coffee but right now it is being able to write in my journal IN QUIET!
Think of it as a reward!
On the other hand I think it was Josemaria Escriva who said it is the "heroic moment of the day." The choice to get up or sleep in and delay what really should be going on. Sometimes I'll think to myself, "ok, let me get up and do a couple of things and then I'll get back to bed and take a few minutes to sleep." The reality is that once I'm out of bed I rarely ever get back in

Me too! Sometimes I have a little conversation with myself when the alarm goes off, "Do I really have to get up? If I don't, I know that I'll ge annoyed with the kids because I was not prepared for them to wake up. If I do, I might have to drag myself awake, but within 10-15 minutes I'll be awake and ready to tackle my day. Which is the better choice today?"
Today, it was my choice to sleep 1/2 hour later. We had a really big day yesterday (hubby had flat tire on the way home from work and we had to go get him and tire, get it fixed, take him back to car, got home late, stayed up way past bedtimes, oops....sorry for the rambling). Anyway, we had a long day so the extra sleep was greatly needed and that's a choice I made.
Now that I've started a routine of getting up early, I must say that it does get a bit easier as time passes. I will never leap out of bed and do a jig in the morning , but I don't have to argue with myself as much anymore.

Well I woke up early this morning easy as pie, like a whole hour before my alarm. I am hoping I won't be dragging my butt later today

You might be dragging...but that's ok. Gut it out and mentally note that you HAVE TO go to bed 15 - 30 minutes earlier tonight. Try not to nap unless it's really necessary - you need to feel tired enough to go to sleep at a reasonable time tonight. Go to bed earlier and see how you do tomorrow. You're working on your entire sleep habit - not just the morning routine.
AND....I wanted to add that even though I'm a night person by nature, I've really enjoyed discovering the mornings in their quiet. Like others have said, it helps to have that little bit to look forward to in the morning! I enjoy my coffee and 15 minutes of blissful, uninterrupted quiet for my morning prayers. I can usually get a load of laundry rolling as well. Though it's not in my nature to get up as early as I do, I've come to relish it and what it means in terms of the things I can do during the day.
Cheering for you Jillian! Here's a little morning sunshine!

I think that I've heard that to change one's sleep habits, you have to go through a few weeks of just getting up early and pushing through the day. Going to bed earlier will follow because you will be sleepy, but trying to go to bed early without having gotten up earlier won't really work.

thank you everyone. I just bought Simplifying Your Domestic Church to use for meditation purposes and to hopefully guide me and our family on track. I think I will use the meditation moments to give focus to my mornings. It will give me something to focus on and look forward to in the morning :)

I became a "morning person" one year at college when I decided to wake up early every morning to pray. It was during Lent so that is what I chose to do for my "fasting" (I fasted from more sleep in the morning). I remember praying each night that I would get up early and be awake enough to pray. Once Lent was over, it was such an established routine, I couldn't imagine "not" getting up to pray. It's lasted all these years ... although my newest newborn is sort of messing it up a bit. I know that's only temporary though.
Over the years I've come to really love praying the Liturgy of the Hours. I think having that as my prayer each and every morning helps me to stay on track too.
One other thing - I find it a motivation for me to get up and come check out what's going on here at 4Real. I give myself about 30 minutes each morning for that while I drink my coffee and get "woken up"! (Maybe I need to wake up first though! Some of my posts are a bit blurry at times! )

Good morning my fellow early risers :) Really wanted to stay in bed today took some NyQuil last night since we are still fighting the "ickies" off so it was pretty tough to get my butt moving. I've got coffee, and dh is at PT this morning so he will be back in a little bit so I really do have some quiet time
