Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd9 wants to learn about Vikings has anyone; great books, websites, printables, lapbooks etc, any resources, they would recommend to study this period of history?

Looking through the archives I'm surprised to discover we haven't talked about this in depth before.

I have a few books on Vikings due to some family history. I have only picked up things as I have run across them. Unfortunately, it isn't much but they are all good books for elementary kids.

Vikings: Usborne Book
Viking Raiders: Usborne book OOP
Story of the Vikings: Dover Coloring Book (looks like when I searched Amazon there were a few more with Viking themes, as well)

Leonie posted forever ago in this thread about British Museum Activity Books. I had found one on the Vikings and really think it's great.

See British Museum Activity Page for Anglo Saxon and Vikings. At the bottom is a list of their resources in their shop.

And of course, Leif the Lucky by the D'aulaire's.

Erin, your topic has got me looking for more Viking books. I came up with these from Bethlehem books, which are always good! Right now they have a special that you get a free book with every order that is good through Feb 15th.

Beorn The Proud
The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow
Beowolf The Warrior

Curse of the Viking Bow- Farley Mowat (a Canadian!)

The Vikings- a Landmark Book (this is such a great smooth read)

Norse Myths- D'Aulaire- my now 10yds was stuck like glue to this at your daughter's age

I second Beorn the Proud- we did that again as a read aloud this year and the children LOOOOVED it. It is morally uplifting as well...

Thanks, some great resources I forgot about

Last night I spent time searching my shelves and the internet for link. I found;

Viking Adventure - Clyde Robert Bulla with what appears to be a fantastic free unit study!
Some beginner readers are:
The Long House in Danger (Olaf the Viking) - Elizabeth Laird
The Dark Forest (Olaf the Viking) - Elizabeth Laird

Betsy, I'm now searching too, looking for booklists and surprised I haven't come across any yet.

For basic information (not a story or read-aloud), we used Who Were the Vikings?. It is a Usborne Internet-linked book (I'm guessing most of the links are probably no longer correct, since the book is pretty old). It does have a lot of good pictures and, as I said, basic factual information.

ETA: NOVA (pbs) has an interesting set of links to Viking-related videos and activites at NOVA: The Vikings. There is evidently a video. I'd preview that first; the Vikings were not known for their high moral standards!

I love Usborne Internet books, I'll see if our library has this one.

Krisite
Thanks

Mary

We started that lapbook today I really like it, actually I like it better than the HOAC lapbook(Native American) we did last year.

Blood Fued - Rosemary Sutcliff
Beowulf - Rosemary Sutcliff
Horned Helmet - Henry Treece
Man With a Sword - Henry Treece
The Viking Saga - Henry Treece
The Viking at Drumshee - Cora Harrison

Sorry Erin - didn't see that was the unit study you had already linked to.

Here is a neat paper model of a Viking Ship. We have made some of these paper models from Canon. THey are really nice - very detailed though.

My guys really enjoyed The Children of Odin by Padraic Colum. (online at Baldwin Project)

We also read the Jean Fritz book about Brendan the Navigator.

A good "mommy book" to read during your Viking time travel is Avalon!

Since the Dover coupon was mentioned in another thread it reminded me there were probably some good activity books at Dover on Vikings.

Viking Designs Stained Glass Coloring Book
Viking Village Sticker Picture
Story of the Vikings Coloring Book
Fun With Vikings Stencils

Some online interactives:
Viking Quest game -BBC site
Tour a Viking Ship online - PBS site

JohnPaul and I did a Viking mini-unit last year ... including knitting him a hoodie with runes spelling out his name! Here's a link to some of the resources we used: Viking Mythology unit ... on a side note, this sweater was just published in the Feb-Apr 2011 issue of Cast On! (pg 57).

Very cool - and making something to wear for the unit is a great idea, too.
