After 13 years of homeschooling I still flounder in the Arts despite wanting to introduce the Fine Arts to my children. I'm currently planning for our new school year and realise my biggest problem is lack of resources. I think I need an easy to follow program. I've been combing old threads here reading about; Classical Kids vs Music Masters, Look Mommy its a Renoir vs Artistic Pursuits etc until my head is spinning.

Would anyone like to just tell me what to buy?
Needed: Easy to Follow Art Appreciation in a box
Simple Music Appreciation in a Box
Basic Craft Program.

Erin-

I would definitely go with Artistic Pursuits over the Renoir program, which does not include projects to do and did not seem to grow much with my dc..

I am liking How to Introduce Your Child to Classical Music in 52 Easy Lessons.   Very simple to use. You do have to track down the music yourself...but between the internet and library that has been easy.

Basic crafts- I keep an eye on The Crafty Crow for projects that appeal to me. Plenty to chose from there!

Artistic Pursuits is very pricey, is it really worth it?

What exactly is IYCTCM in 52 lessons?

I always forget about the Crafty Crow, I guess this means planning ahead works best?

Erin-

We talked about the 52 lessons book here: link

I wound up buying a used copy from CathSwap, and I like it. It gives a short intro explaining each piece of music... what the story is about, who the composer is, what to listen for, etc.

I usually spend 2-3 weeks on each piece before moving on to the next.
I have found this program to be:
1. One that the kids enjoy
2. Easy for me to use (vital here )
3. One that that will last a good long while. I won't have to shop around for a music appreciation program for a long time.

In addition, I have been using the Keyboard Capers program for a couple of years now, which teaches music theory in a fun way: games, maniupulatives, etc. Again, we are working through it very slowly, but it is a program that both the kids and I like, and it is getting the job done.
I am not tempted to go looking for something else, which is always a clue for me that it "works" for us.
Keyboard Capers
Amazon also carries it, I think

The Artistic Pursuits program is really "in a box"... you can bulk order the supplies, so you easily have all you need for each lesson. My dc enjoy the projects, and definitely without this guide we would not being doing some of these projects. One big plus is that it really is art appreciation and a craft program all in one. You are looking at famous works of art and discussing them, then you are doing a related craft. It's all planned out for you. You could easily use your computer during the lesson to show other works of art by the same artist or in the same genre.

I do think it would be more meaningful long term for us if I took more time to flush out the lesson.... right now we are using the K-3 book 2 about artists. I should really spend more time gathering more info about the artists before each lesson to make them more "real". This is pure laziness on my part. I have the a good bio book (Kathleen Krull), and I have a coloring book with famous composers in it. I need to pull them out and use them!

It is pricey, but the lesson books could be revisited over and over and used for many children. Linda at Sacred Heart books carries the series, and you can get free shipping (at least here in the US). I have bought the manuals used, also.

If I had to sit down and plan out my own art curriculum, I just don't think it would get done. I get overwhelmed and run out of time. Rather than throwing up my hands and abandoning art, I use this program. We also do CM artist study once a week.

None of my usual sellers have 52 lessons I'll keep looking though.

I would second Artistic Pursuits if you want something boxed. I haven't purchased it but my friend did and I looked at it for use in co-op last semester. It is very easy to use -- step by step explanation and uses great works of art as examples. It teaches about art and how artists see things/think.

I love art!

Crafty Crow is so great for fun crafts. For art ideas if you don't want to purchase a program or want to supplement what you purchase, three blogs that I *love* are:

Deep Space Sparkle
Art Projects for Kids
Harmony Art Mom

I always check the library to see if they have a book about the artist we're studying (you can even do this with Artistic Pursuits). There are so many children's books about artists now (and composers). It's an easy way to supplement.

Also wanted to clarify, Erin- if you buy the AP book, then the supplies come separately. You have to order those or track them down yourself. But there are links at the website to two places that will send you all you need as a bulk order. I have done this and was very happy going that route, I"d much rather have ink rollers and sea sponges show up in the mail than search them out at the craft store.

For our CM artist study, I use art prints from calendars, coffee table books and library books. I am always on the hunt for more art prints-. Here we now have the option of using Costco to get nice prints for a small cost. But how I wish there was one company dedicated to making CM study prints!

That's funny, Erin. I found that site yesterday after you started this thread. I thought it looked like a nice resource for doing a basic art appreciation study. It has everything laid out to read/follow easily. I like that it has a nice variety of artists to choose from.

Do you remember the old Artist of the Month and Composer of the Month studies we did here on 4 real about 3 years ago? Lots of resources there as well.

Anyone up for reviving this study and doing some new ones? I really enjoyed them, but very few folks seemed to be going along with them together.

I am so glad you asked this question Erin because I have failed miserably at picture study, music study and art this year. My only consolations are that my kids take piano lessons and they all like to draw in their free time!
I don't mean to hi-jack, but regarding "How to Introduce Your Child ...", I've seen it sold at Emmanuel, but I've hesitated because of the need to purchase the music seperately. Melinda, you mentioned finding the music on the internet. Is there a site you would recommend for that?

what a great site! I don't do much computer time with the boys (intentionally) but we lost a bit of time just now doing a lot of memory puzzles.

Wow- what a find! This site will be perfect to use with the Artistic Pursuits book... very easy and quick info to supplement the lesson. I can use the section about Drurer right now... we are just going to start the second lesson about him.
The kids will love seeing his self-portraits (a great way to make him more "real"). If only I could pronounce his name correctly

Becky-

To be honest, there has only been one piece of music so far that my library has not had... Pier Gynt by Grieg. (And they do have it.... it's just that I have been first in line for it for nearly two months now, which is a mystery )

Anyway- I turfed that one to dh and asked him to download a copy for me from on-line. He quickly found it at itunes, but I made him keep searching until he found a free version to download, which took an additional five minutes (found a free piano version right away but I wanted full orchestra. Sheesh, I'm picky! ). This is just the kind of project I like to ask dh to help with.... not too difficult or time consuming, but a huge help for me. My kids love track four of Peir Gynt- the crazy gnomes in the king's hall. They listen to it over and over.... go figure!

This is one we actually have and my kids love it too! My younger boys even act out their own version of that part of the music. It's goofy, but at least they're listening and they recognize that one!

Oh, yes! I stumbled across that site this fall and think it's a wonderful resource for picture study!
