Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know when I want to star more CM in our schooling...but where? What area will be a natural and easy way to move towards a more CM learning day?

I am thinking about Scripture memorization. What about copywork? I want to make this easy on myself and my daughter, and a smooth transition from our textbook/workbook based stuff. My hope is to start next week when we go back to learning after Christmas.

I would think memorization and copywork would go hand in hand nicely.. since copying something is one way to help memorize it.

I think memorization and copywork are great first steps. Enjoy your transition!

I'll piggyback on this...I'm not sure I've posted more than once. Anyway, my oldest is 6 and we are using MA year 1B with him. I have the CHC first grade handwriting book for formation, but I intermittently add in copywork. But I am wondering, if his print still needs practice, should I focus on just the 5-10 min. of handwriting in the workbook a day, rather than adding in copywork where he doesn't have tracing? Sometimes I'll use a printable worksheet I make on the Handwriting wizard web site so that he can still trace. He's bright, he just doesn't like to sit and write and I've tried to be gentle with that as he's a young first grader (7 this summer) and I'm wondering if being too gentle. I'm trying to be authentic with the copywork occasionally but sometimes it seems impractical until maybe next year.

(can't figure out signature as my profile won't show to edit)
Christmas Blessings,

Welcome Amanda, you'll be able to add a signature line after you have 10 posts.

I also wouldn't be overly concerned with a 6 yr old boy and handwriting.. they can take longer to develop the fine muscle control. So I would give him the small amounts you're doing and then add in some fun fine motor skills.. using tweezers to move things, using a dropper with colored water, building with the small legos and things like that.

Thanks, Jodie. His handwriting is decent. Not at the low level I remember some of my transfering mid year first graders being when I taught in public school. But he doesn't write as well outside of the handwriting book, such as on first grade paper. He's more likely to insert capitals, reverse a few letters, etc. I think he just doesn't like it. I've tried for short lessons but I do walk away sometimes which is probably a mistake.

I feel like his fine muscle control is good as he is excellent with legos and a budding artist!

Thanks again!

From my experience what's important is not how early the child starts working on their handwriting or how much they do over the day but the effort that the child is willing to put in. (plus advoiding bad handwriting habits)

If the child puts in 5 mins of concentrated work that's much better then 20 mins of haphazard work. If necessary, it's better to wait until the child is able to put in the concentrated work.

My oldest child did have delays in her fine-motor control so we waited until she was seven before starting *any* handwriting practice and even then it was only one sentence a day. My second and third children started in grade one with more normal quantities of writing.

What difference has it made between my first and second child at age nine? It's simple, my oldest who was determined to write nicely (even though it was a bit harder for her) had better handwriting even though she started a year later.

In some ways I think it would have been better to have had shorter more focused lessons with my second even though she didn't have the same problems as my oldest.    Bad habits are very annoying to eliminate.

Thanks all about the handwriting/copy work. I'll keep all that in mind!
