Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I hope I'm posting this in the right place, and that it is an appropriate topic for these boards. I did a quick search, but didn't see any other post realting to felt boards, so here goes...

Do any of you use them? How do you use them? How do you keep them organzied? I have shapes, a few stories, numbers and letters, but they seemed to be taken out and played with and then they get all mixed up. For example, Caps for Sale get mixed up with the Care Bears (Care Bears need hats, too, right? And monkeys need cute puffy baloons and flowers! ).

The mixed up thing is only a problem in that they all seem to get tossed in together and then become "too much" and not really appreciated, kwim?

Thanks for your help, I'm in the process of creating more "stiff" felt letters to use as the moveable alphabet for dd4, and I'm growing anxious thinking about adding to the masses of felt.

Cici,

I inherited some felt boards and felt pieces from my mom's best friend who owned a preschool for years. She organized her felt pieces in labeled ziploc bags by subject (ie: farm animals, lowercase letters, fairytale, etc.). I have often thought of getting ar plastic file folder crate and filing the ziplocs in the business-size hanging folders by subject...

Probably not much help, but my humble ideas! I still have a felt bible story of Noah's Ark that I have been cutting out for over a year, off and on!

We use a homemade felt board with the little ones. We practice our numbers, shapes, talk about weather and dressing with our Weather Bear. We also do narrations of Fairy Tales and Nursery Rhymes.

To keep them organized I have them each in a separate bag labeled with a # (or a descriptive word). On the back of the materials that have stiff paper backing a have corresponding #'s. For example, all of the "The Three Billy Goats Gruff" are labeled with #2 and they go in the baggie that is labeled with #2. Pretty straightforward but it works for us. I also use this system with puzzles & their pieces.

I keep the felt pieces up out of the children's reach and they must ask permission to use them for independent play. I do however, keep the board within reach to entice them to use it.

I would love more ideas on how to use this wonderful tool!

Hi Cici,

For some time I have wanted to use a felt board with my youngest son, and recently his speech therapist encouraged me to do so. I'd like to have dh make a board ~ somewhere I once found simple instructions for doing this, but I seem to have lost them.

How are you making the letters stiff? Do you use wool or acrylic felt?

Thanks for bringing this up ~ I think felt boards are a wonderful tool for working (and playing!) with children. I once interned at a nursery school and was so impressed by their huge and beautiful collection of felt used for storytelling. I have always wanted to replicate that at home for my boys.

Dawn,

For my felt board, I bought a piece of foam board and two colors of felt at Walmart. We glued the felt to the felt board (one color per side) and then I used blue duck tape to "seam" the edges. Low cost and the kids seem to love it!

For stiff felt letters, I went to Michaels and bought the felt that's, well, stiff. I'm looking for a good upper and lower case pattern now. To give credit where credit is due, I saw the idea for felt moveable letters here, on this thread.

This we do, too. Except I have to work more with narrations.

Ahhh - I think we're going to try this.

And this too!

Thanks!

When my children were little I bought a coloring book that had pictures to different nursery rhymes. We sat down and colored all the pictures and then we cut out and laminated them and then I attached a little bit of velcro on the back of each picture and used them as we learned many, many, rhymes. I also did this with fairy tales and religious pictures. What wonderful memories my children and I have about that board.

I had a small plastic basket with file folders one for each story, rhyme, or religious lesson. And labeled them on the file. Some I would keep seperate for the kids to have access to others I put up just for school time.

I also cut made things out of felt to use for math lessons for counting and grouping, your imagination is the only thing that can hold you back. Enjoy this time and fun project.
