Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Dd is having a hard time playing by herself while I work with ds. I need ideas of activities for her to do that will hold her interest and keep her busy for 20 minutes at a pop. She has never been a good "player" --never had the time to teach her. I am struggling with her--and ds's need for me.
We currently have-
play doh
moon sand
a small sand box
playing on the computer-webkinz, starfall--I don't care for these options much
videos -not my favorite either
finger weaving
small sand box
doll house
will try books on tape--probably won't be a winner and they only last a few minutes.
HELP!!!

Coloring pages - saint of the day; related to some other academic area that you are doing or to an interest. Dover Publications has lots of interesting/educational coloring books and also has some "stained glass" coloring books. These have pictures printed on a waxy-ish paper that can be colored (my dc have preferred using felt markers on these) and then taped to windows so that the light shines through. Beautiful.

Maybe some puzzles? Lacing cards? Cutting shapes out of pieces of felt?

Potholder weaving or a small, simple loom?

A card-making kit? Friendship bracelets?

Physical activities such as jump rope? Jacks?

Writing stories, either with words or drawing picture stories?

Will add ideas as they occur to me.

Does she read? Can she do copywork while you are busy with your son?

Peace,
Nancy

Science-related coloring pages (my dd colored 50+ birds of different species over the course of a year - we had a bulletin board for them all); or,

if you must go the video/DVD route, I highly recommend Magic School Bus videos. Excellent science.

My daughter's enjoy spending time with their watercolor pencils and waterbrushes. A lot of the Dover Coloring books give permission to copy and they print out nicely on watercolor paper.

And there's always my mom's response to boredom.

She considered it her job to provide a reasonable assortment of toys, craft items and books and our job to avoid boredom. If we bothered her with complaints of boredom her solution was...

Chores!!!!!

Eight years old is old enough for quite a few chores

Dusting, folding or putting away clothes, washing windows, loading or clearing out a dishwasher, washing dishes that don't require too much scrubbing, tidying up a room.... there's generally something that can be done.

HAHAHAHAHA - that is so what my mom said! There are 9 kids in our family and she was quick to hand you the toilet brush if you complained of boredom- there are always toilets to clean in a house with 11 people!

Back to the topic> Would a workbox type system work for your daughter? Maybe 4 or 5 choices for the time you need to work with your son? I might also suggest a timer so that she knows she needs to be on her own for 30 minutes (or whatever you set up) before she can join up with you guys.

Also, are there any particular interests that she could use this time for to make it more of a special thing? Like if she loves horses having a special horse project or coloring book waiting for her?

All great suggestions, especially the chores! My 8 year old loves working with stamps, hole punchers (different shapes ie. snowflakes, flowers etc)and scrap cardstock. Lately she has been coloring birds and horses, playing on her lap harp, and sewing felt animals.

For books on tape, have you tried the Magic Tree House ones? They last pretty long. Or have you looked at Theresa's idea over at Lapazfarm.

She is having her daughter listen to world history and draw a timeline picture while she is listening. That could take 30 minutes and she would learn alot.

HTH,

My almost-8 year old loves recordings of Beverly Cleary's Ramona books and they last a couple of hours each.

Narnia books on tape might be another winner.. I read them outloud to my kids 5 years ago and they were hanging on every word.
