Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ok, we have new insurance now and we won't get the discount for teen driver if we don't have a driver's ed certificate. Our teen is driving already and we did a very thorough job training him --- I really don't want to pay mega bucks for the local version where we send our teen off alone in the car with a stranger. I was wondering if there is a driver's ed program that grants a certificate that we could do from home?

Edited to say thanks for the information. I did contact the on line driving school referenced. He was very kind on the phone and advised that I contact local driving ed services (our state evidently doesn't accept their homeschool option as it does not come with a certificate). Chari, I'd love to know what you used if you don't mind PM me. I know every state is different but if there is a home option that comes with a certificate, I could check it specifically through our insurance to see if it would suffice. Right now I have called every drivers ed listed in the phone books - there are only 4.

one sounded like they did a good job, some real instruction and did not object to a parent riding in the back seat. They also offered references, guy was retired military and sounded older. Price $300 - but that did include 6 hours of driving and quite a few hand outs.

another 3 didn't answer the phone at all. Of these:

One is the one currently serving the school system and have no openings. Back in the day - with our oldest, they were $275 and basically taught nothing, just chatted in the car with child while they drove. I have heard some incidents with them so not really keen unless they let a parent ride. (They did not back when our dd did it and we specifically requested that she ride with a female). It was after this that we decided, when we had insurance that didn't require this course, that we could do a better job ourselves and we trained our other 2 drivers ourselves.

The other 2 were duel residence and office - ie the message was left on their home phone but they were using home to run the driving school business. I have no idea about anything concerning them. My instinct says they seem too informal and didn't come across all that professional or educated on the phone message. I'm waiting to see if they return my messages and talk to them in person before making a final judgement. I really do not want to spend $300 to save $100/year over the course of 3 years or so that the discount would apply.

I think there are several, but it depends on each state what they will accept. We have done American Driving Academy. It is based in Colorado, but they say they have home study programs in most of the states (again depends on state law). There is one with both the classroom and driving portion done by parents at home for I think under $100. I find their site really confusing, but they are helpful to talk to on the 800 number. Could probably figure out what you need to do.

You will probably need to make sure that whatever you look at is acceptable in your state. In ours, they recently stopped accepting private driver's ed discounts for teenagers and it must be done through the school system. Very frustrating for parents.

In our state, no online driver's ed is permitted and you have to do the learner's permit application via the school system so that truants can't get learner's permits.
