Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our rather large parish homeschool group does a yearbook. We started it last year. My then 9th grader worked on it and loved it. This year I am one of the yearbook coordinators as said child was desperate for it to continue after the original mom who started it stepped down.

Anyways, my dd is going to have more responsibility with it than she did last year. Some more editing and so forth, also in planning. This is in addition to her staff assignment of some club photos and articles and layout/design of said club pages.

So I'm thinking making this count as at least a 1/2 credit Journalism class.

What else do you think would be good to add? I was thinking of maybe doing a private family blog to be added to weekly with "newsie" type articles.

Got any other ideas? I feel like my mind isn't stretching and coming up with much else but I know there must be more!!!

Kacky, your ideas sound great!

My dd is a journalism major. I'll ask her if she has any more ideas.

Love,

Kacky,

I was a journalism undergrad ... one thing you might have her do is write up a monthly newsletter/blog for the "rather large co-op" you mention. She can write articles of interest directly to the kids (so you're teaching her focused writing) while also teaching her to limit flowery speech and just get the 5W's down. Help her with different styles of writing -- sports journalism is VERY different from writing "hard" news or advice columns. Check PWLibrary for journalism books ... I know they had quite a few. I would count it as a full credit (yearbook in highschool is a credit).

Holler if I can give you any specific book titles ... I have some here and know there are lots others out there.
