I'm intregued by the idea of year round homeschooling. We're not really in a position to do it atm, as we have one child at school, but it's something I can imagine myself doing in the future.

I guess there are as many ways to approach it as there are home educating families who do it! Would you share with me how you organise your days and weeks. Also, why did you decide to work in this way? Do your ds enjoy it, or do they resent working when their friends are out playing?

Good question with about a million possible answers!

I suppose what we do here would be considered year round schooling....we do take holidays and mostly they seem to align with the PS system, however I find after a few days (a week at most) my kids just naturally gravitate back towards some kind of learning. They get bored when their minds are not engaged.

I used to have rigid structure to my days, but found it just doesn't mesh well with our learning style (which is often tangential) We'll start off learning about one thing and end up chasing something else entirely!

So for us, year round schooling is more our lifestyle than anything I can really spell out in a logical kind of format. It works best for us as we're fairly fly by the seat of our pants type geeks who just can't help exploring stuff. I sometimes worry we spend too much doing informal learning....(which is lots of verbal and visual type learning rather than written stuff that makes for easy reporting...

.) but my kids seem to prefer school this way. We do make sure Math is done every day. (5 days a week) It's the one thing we do that's properly structured. Everything else is spontaneous.

I'm not sure any of that made sense....

We homeschool year round. The way we started doing two years ago has been my favorite method...I plan to stick with it. We start the first week in August. We use MODG, which has 32 weeks in the syllabi. We school for three weeks, then we have a "catch up week" to make up any work we missed due to illness, field trips, etc. The exception is the beginning of the year,,,I only plan to finish two weeks of the syllabus during the first little three week session to make getting started a bit easier. The kids are motivated to stay caught up as much as possible so we can have some fun stuff during the catch up weeks. We take off an extra week at Christmas and an extra week at Easter. And we take all of July off. I like this method because it gives us plenty of flexibility to do fun things all year, and I don't care about doing some school during the summer. We live in the south, and summer is pretty miserable. I'd rather have more time for fun in the spring and fall.

My kids don't mind. We've always schooled year round in some form or fashion, so they are used to it. At times we have had complaints if my kids have had a neighborhood kid that wants to play, but I remind them of all the times we get to do fun things while their friend is in school. Plus, they can still play with neighborhood kids when we are done!

We homeschool year round. I start in early June with 3 days a week. We usually go on vacation in September and take off most of December and start back usually the second week in January. My high schoolers do 3 days a week and then start with a full 5 day week in August.
