I'm looking for magazines with excellent writing. Do your teens have any favorites?
Love,

We ordered the WWII magazine from HistoryNet plus the special issue, World War 2: 2,194 Days That Changed Everything. The special issue arrived already (the subscription kicks in in 6-8 weeks) and so far, so good. We're reading it for content as well as finding examples of good writing...how to be precise and compact in writing, how to use supporting details, how to use descriptive segments, how to use quotes, statistics, etc.
Any other teens out there reading magazines? What is the writing quality?
Love,

Very timely thread for us, Angie! We have just discovered how much we enjoy magazines in our home education!
Cobblestone History Magazine
We really enjoy the older issues of Cobblestone magazine. I am not a subscriber, but when I have finalized history or literature plans, I enjoy perusing their back issues and selecting a few that are pertinent to our upcoming studies.
Though the older back issues (they go back to 1980) sometimes contain outdated information, the writing is well done and the articles are engaging. I prefer the older issues because of the content. My dd just finished reading the magazine on John James Audubon (1980) and she really enjoyed it. The Hudson River School (1987) magazine was fantastic as well! The Cobblestone magazines are great for introducing a topic or person of interest and providing ideas for rabbit trails and further explanations.
Learning Through History Magazines
I do the same thing with these magazines as I do with the Cobblestone - I scan the back issues for topics that are pertinent to our studies. These are engaging, meaty, and informative. I like these a great deal. These magazines have the added benefit of containing a few activities and unit studies at the end of each magazine for younger students/siblings.
Edited to add: I'd probably consider both of the above at the younger end of the high school spectrum, which is where we are right now.
The Catholic Faith - Living & Teaching the Catholic Faith
This magazine used to be published through Ignatius, I believe. My mom gave me several years of back issues. They're so solid and informative and each magazine has a central theme. I'm cataloging them and will be using them for an ongoing religion/apologetics series throughout high school. The articles are so wonderful! The last issue I have is from 2002 on the theme of The Real Presence. The first article in that magazine is written by Father Hardon!! Wonderful! And...the last article in this particular magazine is written by Mary Gildersleeve!!!!
*****************************************
We don't have subscriptions to any magazines right now, but I thought I'd offer two ways of making use of magazines that were outside of the normal subscribe route since this has been a frugal way of making use of this resource for us:
* order only pertinent back issues of a particular mag
* ask friends and relatives for old collections of great magazines and catalog for use in particular subjects.
We're finding that magazines make for great short-burst reading and discussion opportunities. I'm really looking forward to hearing of other favorite magazines for high schoolers!

Gilbert Magazine might be good for a Chesterton fan.

As I was looking for Catholic magazines, I stumbled upon St. Maria's Messenger
Of course, it is OUT OF PRINT, but some back issues are available. Is anyone familiar with these issues???
Also, they seem to be developing an interactive website for Catholic Teen girls. My oldest would love such an outlet.

OH, I just realized that Angie was actually looking for something else.
Maybe I should start a new thread?

Any tips on magazines for our older children is most very welcome, Stephanie!
Starting a new topic on interactive websites sounds great, too . Thanks for sharing.
Love,

Ok, here is a little different suggestion:
Outside Magazine is one that ds (and the rest of us) really like. The articles are truly excellent, well written and thoughtful, I think. In fact, John Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" started off as an Outside magazine article.

Theresa, I'm thrilled to know that you all like this magazine. How are the advertisements? Does it have a political slant? Does it have a predominantly male voice? Thanks!
ETA: Does it address health and fitness?
Love,

Hmmm. Well, being a magazine devoted to enjoyment of the outdoors, it does have a strong "outdoor ethic", preservationist bent, but I have not noticed anything overtly political.
Ads seem relatively safe, as far as I've seen.I can't recall anything offensive. There will be folks in athletic-type attire, including sometimes swimsuits. But always in an appropriate way as far as I have seen.
Male voice. Yes, probably, though there are certainly female contributing authors as well.
Health and fitness, absolutely. Tons of that stuff.See here.
Hope that helps!

Bumping this to add and ask...
My 16yo is preparing for PSAT/SAT tests. The Barron's test prep book recommends reading magazines to improve critical reading comprehension. Here are the specific recommendations:
The New Yorker
Smithsonian
The New York Review of Books
National Geographic
Natural History
Harper's Magazine
Any opinions on these? I'm hoping to find excellent writing without sacrificing exposure to immoral content. Short of that lofty goal , I'm willing to work through difficult content with my ds.
The point of these recommendations is to develop an interest in as many fields as possible. So...do you have other magazines that you would recommend for variety of content?
Thanks!
Love,
