My son is staying at home for his first year of college  , but I'm putting together a basket of dorm room items for his Scout troop's silent auction. Dorm life has changed a lot over the last (number deleted, LOL!) years. What do you think I should include in the basket?

reading lamp or book light.. so you can read without disturbing a roommate. a small lamp might be better for studying.
a laundry bag for carting laundry to the laundry room/ laundromat

Like the laundry bag idea!
How about the "bare necessities" like deoderant, shampoo/conditioner, toothbrush, etc?

Something we never had to think about is all the power cords needed for the plethera of eletctonics since the college eletrical infrastructure hasn't kept pace:

Cooking supplies: Dish tub with plates, silver-ware, mugs for two. Small cooking pot, tea kettle.
Office supplies: stapler, staple remover, pencil sharpener, binder clips, three-hole punch, tape, push pins, pens, pencils, highlighters.

I just have to share with you Barbara.. my mom bought me a pack of staples at Costco when I started college.. 20 years later I called her up to let her know that I finally used them up. 
When you said stapler I just had to laugh because of that and wanted to share.

Trash bags and a little trash can. These folks generate a lot of trash - paper and food. Handi wipes or something easy to do a quickee wipe down. My dd used this especially to wipe down piano keys, door knobs and her hands when everyone was really, really sick and dragging around or when your roommate has the flu and you cannot afford to catch it.
A lot depends on the size of the dorm room - but I ditto the electronic surge protectors, computer cords and extension cords and those little multi-outlet plug in gizmos - we used tons of those cubes - and get the flat ones that don't take as much space. There are lots of rules about cords - think we were required to get a second surge protector. Also, no matter what you do, have it all ahead of time. Do NOT go shopping on move in day. It is a zoo.
Oh, the other thing is getting one of those pads that make the bed more comfy. It isn't essential, but really was nice and the beds aren't in the best of shape. Mine also appreciated rolls of quarters - for laundry and midnight snacks while studying.
You'll need at least one under the bed storage bin.
Don't get a lot of brooms, and such - one means of getting the dirt and dust off the floor that doesn't take a lot of space is all. Skip the mops - the room is so small that the handy wipes work about as well. Honestly, they rarely use them and they just take up closet space. Ditto for irons and such and drying racks. And coordinate with the roommate so you don't have a bunch of duplicates. For laundry carrier, it is best if it is mesh or open at the top or something so that it breathes. We got one that collapsed or expanded depending on how full it was - but it wasn't a draw string close it tight. You don't want the stuff mildewing before they get around to it. Honestly, they do laundry maybe when they come home or right after tests at quarter breaks. (Get lots of those things that just cannot be worn for weeks on end without washing).
OH, and flip flops for the shower.
My dd favorite is a lamp we got that had a built in place to plug in the computer/electronics and lots of storage space for pens and pencils and ....
Lots of wood that can be cut to size and jammed (not nailed down) above the desk so you can build in extra storage space and keep the desk area free for working.
Ok - I realize I made my poor children sound like real messes. They know how to do all kinds of things and keep up with laundry and cleaning, etc. when they are at home. Time crunch just seems to overwhelm and they just don't have as much time - so they put things off till the last possible moment.
