For those that do yearly tests, can you please share which one you use and why?

I am in a state that requires yearly test. I have used the CAT test from Seton in the past, but I wouldn't mind a test that was either more gentle or more informative on how they are actually doing.

If I had my druthers I wouldn't test at these early elementary ages, but nevertheless it's what we need to do.

CAT test through Seton Home Study. The kids are fine with it and it is reasonably priced. We use it for our portfolios that we are required to send to the state of Vermont. I've tried other tests and always have gone back to the CAT test.

There is a test that was recommended I think by Cactus Mouse ( correct me and sorry if I'm mistaken) here at the forum that several people have liked. I've heard it is "gentle" and very helpful.   I've been wanting to try it here with our children.   I think it is called PASS with Hewitt homeschooling resources. Although I don't know if it is on your states approved list of standardized tests.

We've done the CAT test by Seton and also the PASS test. My children like the PASS test better. It takes longer (we take several days), but it's untimed and the results are more informative. You can only give it to students in grade 3 to 8, though.

The PASS test is one that I have heard about. I have one child that would be in the age range so I need to look at that test more closely.

Has anyone done the Iowa Basic?

I have done the Iowa. I liked it. I did the CAT-5 when ds was little. The Iowa gives me a lot more information and is easy for me to interpret. Funny, ds scored pretty much as I thought he would. Go homeschooling!!

After I re-read my first post I realized that I could have written it better. The CAT test is really quite easy and gentle (at least fro 1&2 grade).

I guess what I was looking for is a test that might actually help me be a better teacher to my children, seeing as I have to give it to them anyway. At least at these young ages...I think there is merit to taking standardized test as children get older to prepare them for future tests like the SAT, etc.


I want to order mine this weekend and I think I am going to get the PASS test for one child and the CAT for another, but I might just end up doing the CAT test for both.
