unit study? I want to help my children be more loving and kind to each other, so I was hoping to make a unit study of it, as well as other virtues. My plan so far is simply to look up the definition, find bible quotes dealing with it, and read some stories from "The Book of Virtues".
I am wondering how we might "practice" it, you know, for training purposes. Any ideas?
Also, if we do a lapbook, it'll be our first one. I'm not sure what we would do for topics for the mini-books. Perhaps a narration of a story? What else?
Thanks!

Splendid Syncletica! Good thinking!
Game idea: How about printing everyone's name on a separate piece of paper, folding and putting in a bowl then each week every family member takes out one name, and performs random acts of kindness towards that family member? Guess who picked their names at the end of the week, with you even doing "extra acts of kindness" towards those you did not pick, in case it becomes too easy?

There are some fun picture books about manners! See what your libabry has.
One of my favorites is The Little Book of Manners for Boys by Bob and Emilie Barnes.
They have one for girls, too.
There are also the Thing-a-ma-jigs or something like that.......anyone know?
I found our copy: THE THINGUMAJIG BOOK OF MANNERS by Irene Keller.....it takes an opposite, funny by humorously showing the Thingumahigs with their bad manners.....
We even have one about penguins from the library right now: PLEASE SAY PLEASE by Cuyler.
FUN!

On a recent road trip when the kids were at each other we started a game where each person took turns saying 2 things that they liked/appreciated/loved about another person. If they could come up with 2 things, they got a gummy bear (which Tim eats to stay alert while driving). We went round the car until everyone had had a turn saying something nice about everyone else. They weren't excited to play at first but ended up loving the game.
For a craft you could make sacrifice beads but use them for kind acts. The kids could place a heart at the end where the medal goes to remind them that it is for loving acts.

There is a free unit study based on The Book of Virtues.
Here is the link.

These are some great ideas! Thank you.
I just came across this site:
teaching children about kindness
and thought some others might find it useful as well.
So far, what I've done is: (changed it to "Charity" unit study
Read 1 Corinthians 13 : the "charity is patient, charity is kind" chapter.
Read quotes of the Saints about charity.
Read stories from the "Book of Virtues" and "The Children's Book of Virtues"
Requested a number of books from the library about manners.
dd9 did written narration, definition of "charity" and its synonyms, copywork for 1 Corinthians 13, read "A Little Book of Manners for Girls."
ds7 did oral narration yesterday and today did copywork of that narration, definitions, drew pic of an example of kindness.
dd5 did an oral narration, a simple definition and drew a picture of an example of kindness.
ds4 did a simple definition and drew a pic (same as above)
I plan to also go through specific stories from the Lives of the Saints, does anyone know of any specific story that would be suitable for this?
I know St. Elizabeth of Hungary and how she always gave to the poor despite objections from her in-laws, and God even provided a miracle by refilling a granary to overflowing when she had given the last of the grain away.
Blessed Margaret of Castello always returned kind words for mean ones spoken to her.
I'd appreciate if anyone could mention other examples that they know of. I know there are so many examples, but it helps to be reminded...
Also, I'm kind of having trouble figuring out what to do for the 4 and 5 year olds. Any thoughts?
ETA: I just purchased this set, what an ideal thing!

I've also seen some book units and lapbooks on Homeschool Share . A search for kindness pulls up a character lapbook plus book-based unit studies and other lapbooks that would apply.

The way I encourage my Little Flowers girls to practice each virtue is to make a list of some ways we can demonstrate the virtue and put up a picture of a tree without leaves or flowers. When the girls do something from the list, they can put on a flower by drawing, using stickers, or whatever. You could add leaves, too. So, have them make a list and then practice those acts.
A friend of mine had a candle for whatever type of character trait her children were focusing on. In the morning, she lit the candle, and she blew it out whenever they messed up or at the end of the day if they did not. The deal was that in advance they all agreed on some reward when the candle had burned down to nothing. She said she used different sized candles for different traits and rewards. The bigger the candle, of course, the bigger the reward. And, she explained how this encouraged the children to help one another by not provoking and gentle reminders not to let the candle go out. Like the light of Christ.
Sounds like a great study you're developing! Enjoy.
Blessings,
Jenny

For lent the dc have each pinned to the board a big paper egg that they colored. Whenever they do something nice for each other, they tally it on their egg. the egg with the most tallies on Easter, gets a special treat in their basket. Competition can be fierce .
