Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A friend of my aunt is interested in homeschooling. She has no clue where to begin or what programs to look at (she's not really religious, though is Christian). Her husband is worried about socialization.

I told my aunt I would gather some links and email her. So, spam me, please!

I like NHERI for facts about home education.. like for addressing socialization. Basically it's just the boogie man. When looked at scientifically, the statisics show homeschools are better adjusted than public schooled children.

Quote:
Social and Emotional Adjustment

Dr. Larry Shyers observed children in free play and group interaction activities. Conventionally schooled children had significantly more problem behaviors than did the home educated. This is probably because the primary models of behavior for the home educated are their parents.8

Home educated children are more mature and better socialized than are those sent to school, according to Thomas Smedley's personal interaction and communications approach to understanding socialization.9

Dr. Gary Knowles, of the University of Michigan, explored adults who were home educated. None were unemployed and none were on welfare, 94% said home education prepared them to be independent persons, 79% said it helped them interact with individuals from different levels of society, and they strongly supported the home education method.10

At that link you can get more info on the menu to the left.. the NHERI Reseach link. There's several free fact sheets there.

For the S word try THIS Article

I would also get her to trawl blogs and websites on home education and homeschooling for ideas and curriculum.

My blog has a whole sidebar dedicated to sites and free books etc for curriculum planning. It's what I set it up for. So if it's not taking spamming too far she could look here:

My absolute favorite introductory book is "So You're Thinking About Homeschooling" by Lisa Whelchel. It introduces different homeschooling concepts in a narrative format that's fun and easy instead of dry and overwhelming. It's interdenominational, and it has a lot of resources listed in the back for further information.
