Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know my dc are a long ways away from this, but I was wondering how it works for a child to take an online class via a university? I get fliers every now and then form Oklahoma University and Texas Tech University offering classes for homeschoolers. Do these credits help towards getting into college? My dh is a Texas Tech grad and was curious about this.

It depends on the dc and the subject matter. On-line is the worst of both worlds imo - because you don't have the living interaction that should be a part of upper level, analytical courses. Dc benefit a lot from the questions of other students. It might work better with more how-to type.

It would probably count towards college assuming that college of his choice accepted them - but ask all those questions at the university. Imo, live classes with a live teacher are far better - and dc learn more.

Janet,

Maybe I'm misreading your answer, but the online courses we've done have included great interaction - and this includes courses like Philosophy and English Lit, in addition to Latin (beginning through AP). The kids have a chance to ask questions, and some really great discussions happen.

Courtney, the credits have helped us - we're taking them from ISLAS.org, which is accredited, and admissions counselors have seem pleased to see those grades from "objective" teachers.

Gwen,

I have one in college (19) and five still at home (17,15,13,12,10). They have taken the courses in jr high (a little) and high school. We discovered ISLAS when my oldest was a junior and we were looking for a Latin course. She had studied it for many years - first with a teacher, then on her own. She was at the point where she really needed a teacher.

Since then, we've done most of the Latin courses with one kid or another. The oldest four have taken courses in Latin, English Lit, Philosophy (Thomas Aquinas), Logic, and Chemistry. It's been a really good fit for our family.

ISLAS is made up of Regina Coeli (the Catholic side) and Scholar's Online (the non-Catholic side - although we haven't had any problems with their courses). Check out the website and let me know if you have any other questions! Also, we've discussed ISLAS in the Teen section before - you might check for that discussion.

Anne Marie in NM (but we have lots of family in Denver!)

AnneMarie,

I guess it must depend on the college set-up. ISLAS sounds great. Around here the colleges offer distance learning options that frankly stink - computer graded, all on-line, no interaction. Glad there is something like ISLAS. Perhaps this is something to consider for ours next year.

Janet,

Wow, I didn't realize how lucky we were to find ISLAS! I guess I assumed that most "on-line" courses were like that.
