Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We will "offically" begin home schooling our oldest this fall and I must admit I am a bit nervous. My husband and I both feel that God has placed this on our hearts but we are overwhelmed at the moment. We are the only practicing Catholics in our extended family and we know of only one other Catholic homeschooling family in our town. We feel sort of isolated. I read about all the wonderful things that your homeschool groups are doing and it makes me want that for my kids.

I am thinking that if we attend a really good Catholic homeschooling conference or two this summer it will give us a good start and really make us begin to feel part of a bigger community of hs'ers. Right now we're feeling sort of lonely in this decision.

Any conference recommendations? We live in Upstate NY, but would be willing to travel down the east coast.

Thanks in Advance.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Conferences are the best IMO. You may consider purchasing some of their CDs from past conferences. I always call these conferences a mini-retreat.

The first page has a link to their National Conference in VA/DC/MD area.

Plus, lots of us go to it - it is always fun to meet 4Real friends in real life.

It's a long way to go for you, though. (You could combine it with sightseeing in DC...)

Any conference will be helpful, really - and a huge boost to your mental well-being, just from seeing how many Catholic homeschoolers there really are!

That does look great!

I was looking at last years speaker line-up and there were some great ones! Can't wait to see who will be at this years conference. When do they generally post the speakers?

Thanks for the recommendation!

I agree. When we started, when living in VA, I enjoyed going to the VHEA conference for a few years. It was nice to get some coaching and support and meet new people.
It wasn't a Catholic group and that was OK. I met a lot of really nice people--most homeschoolers are

Speaking of conferences... My sister and I have really enjoyed going to the IHM conference the last 2yrs, but would like to try a different one this year also. The two IHM that we went to were great but very similar speakers. I'm sure they are all great, but what are some others that are good?

The Minnesota conference is probably one of the best in the country, as far as an independent state one. It's very large, lots of vendors, and great speakers.

Ryane, I don't know my NY geogrpahy so don't know the specifics of "upstate." If you are far enough north and west then it might be just as close for you to go through Canada to Michigan. The Michigan (in Lansing)conference is excellent - very well established and great speakers every year. The link is for last year - not yet updated. The Tri-State homeschool alliance (NJ, NY, CT) is not yet as established as some of the the others, but is holding it's second annual one and as a conference planner myself, I always encourage support of the local conferences. They need it to continue and grow.

I have to put in my vote for the IHM conference. We are in NJ and went to the one in VA last year. We LOVE it.
In fact, DH asked me yesterday if we were going again this year!

I also went to the Sacred H.E.A.R.T. conference in NJ.   It is in Orange at St. John the Evangelist Church

The ones within traveling distance for you are:

New England (In Massachusettes)
New Jersey (Orange)
Harrisburg, PA (We get a lot of New York people at this conference. This year Laura Berquist is speaking)
Berlin, NJ They don't appear to have 2010 conference loaded to their site yet.

There was one in Buffalo NY last year, but I'm not sure if they are having one this year.

ETA: Buffalo does have one scheduled!! Here is the link!

Me too! I'm so excited. I was pleasantly surprised at how big the MN conference was last year. It was a little overwhelming for me.    This year it will just be fun.
