I am curious what you all use to keep records for your schooling. I experimented with Homeschool Easy Record for a while--it was easy, but I dropped it after a few months. I do keep a list of our read alouds each month, but other than that I just "know". I know Jeanne's finishing up Saxon 3, do I really need to know when she did which lesson? Or is enough to just know the course is completed? If I have my various notebooks--Religion, Science, Stories, etc.--with dated work in it, do I need anything else? All my state cares about is the year-end test, so I don't need to keep records for them.
My oldest just turned 9, so we're not as far into this journey as some of you, so I'd really like to know how you keep records and what you'd do if you had it to over.
Thanks!

Molly:
For recordkeeping, I keep track of our lesson plan, as we do each day -- jotting down what we actually accomplished. I also have a running list of all picture books we've read (mine are K4 and K). I've also got portfolios for them going that shows progression. Our compliance assoication requires me to submit at half-year and end of year -- attendance records and a "report card", so those are filed too.
I probably don't need to keep all this stuff, certainly our state doesn't require it . However, I keep it for piece of mind and to remind myself how much they're learning -- where they started and where they are now. Also, if we ever move again (since college, I've never lived in the same place more than 5 years ) I'd rather have all the record-keeping in place in case a new state requires it.....
Hope this helps.
Blessings

Our state doesn't require record keeping either. We keep notebooks (history, nature/science, etc), trying to date each entry. This year I also started printing out weekly assignment sheets -- one for each of us. The top half of each sheet is a grid of days of the week and subjects (that I'd like to spend a little time on every day). The boys check off their sheets as we go through the day, and my copy serves as a record of what we've done. If we skip something one day, I simply cross it out. (Several subjects just say "lesson w/ Mommy" or list the book we're using. At the end of the day I often write the lesson number/page numbers we covered in the square on my page. I always fill in the math page they did.)
The bottom half of each page is a FIAR "to study" list exactly like the Gingerbread Baby plans in the Rabbit Trails forum. I check and modify this as necessary too.

Dear Molly,
I have my lesson plans and then I have either notebooks or lapbooks and that's about it. I do keep a pretty good reading list, though and I think that's really important.

Elizabeth-
Can you share what your lesson plans look like? For example, do you plan what you'll use for dictation, copywork, etc.
Thanks!

I just received a trial copy of the HomeSchool Minder as advertized in HDLSA. Our state requires good records of the hours and subjects. Does anyone out there use that one? Love to hear from you. I'll be setting mine up today.
