Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone know of a homeschool graduate who for the most part did just unit studies for their homeschool "career" and can assure me that they are "fine".
We have always done unit studies here (tried other things and school was a nightmare so we went back to unit studies)Once again I find myself in the trap of worrying that my dd is not getting enough in her education and we should add more. My plan has been to continue with KONOS and Beyond FIAR until she is in high school and then going on to KONOS history studies for high school.
If I stick with unit studies will my dd be ready for college and the difference in method or I am setting her up to fail and we should be more traditional now. She is only in 5th grade this year but I am concerned about this.
Thanks

Darlene, I can't help you with this but I have the same concerns. We just started doing unit studies this past year and we have enjoyed our learning time immensely. My oldest is in Gr. 5 as well and I have been wondering if we should continue this as she gets older.   The thought of going back to what we used to do makes me want to cry but I don't want to shortchange my kids.

Blessings,

Darlene, I am not 100% positive, but the first name that pops into my mind is Amanda Bennett. She writes unit studies now to sell, but her kids are mostly grown and I *think* she used unit studies for most of their education. I have met Amanda and think her family is wonderful.

I haven't looked through this, but here are some articles she has written on her webpage.

I also think she might answer you if you emailed her. She is very helpful!

I consider the main task of highschool is to
a) cover the material the child will be expected to know for their choosen path. I find that the best way to reassure myself that my children are learning enough is to find a listing of knowledge and skills and use as a checklist. (best is a list with broad devisions such as primary, elementary, jr high, senior high)

b) for the child to learn how to learn certain tasks such as

-being able to manage their time independently so that you are not needed to remind them of upcoming deadlines
-being able to do the required research, writing and presentation when assigned essays, projects and presentations.
-being able to take notes from both lectures and textbooks (in whatever way best suits the child); this skill incorporates being able to pull out the main idea and essential supporting material from the lecture or text (the notetaking course I took in highschool was very helpful)

I think that unit studies would be a very good way to work on these skills particularly if you gradually moved the planning work over to your child.   As for a) I doubt that it matters how the material is learned.

In university I found that there was plenty of opportunity for such independent work and that a sense of the interconnectiveness of things was very useful.
