I've been doing the workboxes (we use drawers actually) for my K and 2nd grader. It's been going really pretty well. After our Christmas break I wanted to start up my 4th and 5th graders (both boys).
What are some things those of you that have these ages are finding successful? Any suggestions, academic, crafty, or active would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I didn't come up with any new activities for my dd10. I just "organized" her daily lessons in workboxes and let her go to town. Not very creative, but she likes it better than a checklist.

I have some great links and ideas but with the amount that I have to do in the next 72 hours, alaas no time!!!!!!!!
Bump this after the Christmas break and I'll go to town.
I have a 4th grade girls who needs some fresh ideas too!

I'm interested in more ideas too...some things I've used with my 9yo...we haven't been doing workboxes for long either.
--Draw Write Now books
--an episode of an educational dvd, like Liberty's Kids
--playing Art Memo or some other board game that can be played alone
--we have a couple of Klutz books with ideas for making pipe cleaner creations and things out of clay, those are fun.

I am planning to use some of the TOPS Science stuff for my boys workboxes when we start up again. For math and grammar I usually just turn the page in their workbooks. I like using the workboxes because it cuts down on the time we spend looking for readers and other such school items.
I have quite a few of the TOPS science books (thanks to my retired science teacher dad) if you are interested in borrowing one.

That's interesting. My kids are all about checklists. They love them so much that they asked me to print out chore checklists! I made up a master list that details each job ~ even so far as to say, "place books vertically on shelves" ~ and then gave a specific checklist to each child so that they know what to do when.

a simple science page with numbered directions and a digital camera....even my 2nd grader likes to do this.
She gets all the things needed from our "experiment box" and takes photos as she goes along to show me her "finished work".
copywork is an easy easy thing! I use startwrite and the same copywork sentences two days in a row. The third day they have a blank page with the digital recorder and me reading the words. They can hit pause or replay as many times as they want. It's dictation without mom around!
poetry memorization--I also use a digital recorder for them to record themselves reciting a poem. They first record themself reading it then try to say it along with themselves as they listen! They find it very fun.
If they have "homework" from their music teacher, I put this in their workboxes.
I have one fifth grader and one second grader that I use these ideas for...
I also put a chapter book with a timer set for 15 minutes and have them do silent reading.
