Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Not long ago there was a discussion on these boards about the Ruth Beechick way of doing things. It was so helpful to me. We started combining our grammar/handwriting/writing within the writing approach she presents in The Three r's. My son is doing well with it, I think, and he's prety cheerful about it even! We're also doing a Beechick-y kind of math that's very hands-on and real-life. I has helped a lot with our math woes around here. (Goodbye workbooks!)

Some days I struggle with that are-we-doing-enough-this-feels-too-easy feeling. But the kids are happier. Hooray for that!

Anyone else trying a more Beechick-y approach? How's it going?

Let me start by saying, Keira, I bet my bottom dollar you are doing enough!

We have been doing the Ruth Beechick approach for many years with our learning. We love it. So many times it does not feel like enough..especially with our 10 year old...but she is really good at dictation and comprehending whatever she reads or listens to.
We use workbooks as supplements if the weeks get busy with family situations. Here are the daily staples we always use.
_Dictation and Copywork (combining our 13 and 10 year old)
_Some sort of math activity
_Reading aloud "living" books...the children do it and I do also
_Always praying and a choice of any of the following: Bible,Catechism,Saint,Liturgical calendar/celebration
_The older children must always be reading living books on science, history, geography, etc ( not all at once, of course!) They alternate days.
We use textbooks only as spines. They sketch, look at, and fill out maps. They narrate back to me what they read. Not everything of course!

Amazingly enough with this kind of approach our ten year old tested really well on her standardized test. I speak about our 10 year old because she has been schooled the most this way. She scored really well on reading comprehension and vocabulary. We have never done a reading comprehension or vocab workbook with our children!

I combine our 13 year old and 10 year old in spelling and dictation and the little bits of grammar. There has been an incredible improvement with our 13 year old. Workbooks just didn't do it for him!
We pick one grammar topic...let's say appositives and really dive into it for a couple of weeks.

I love You Can Teach Your Child Successfully by Ruth Beechick! I reread it before schooling this year!
Hope this helps a bit:)
