I would be interested in finding out what you guys do for American History. We have been using The Patriots A Patriot's History of the United Stateswhich is a great book. BUT it is way too much for my dd. It has long chapters with no visual aids and a lot of details. I am looking for an alternative...

I started with Sonlight 3, this is our second year in it. It has been good--with some tweaking to make it a little less reading.
Ds, who is 11, has enjoyed the Pioneers and Patriots I have added in per a schedule at the Yahoo Sonlight Catholic group.
So, if you wanted a one book, with a Catholic slant, I do recommend P&P. Ds enjoys some of the projects and questions at the ends of the chapters. There are some black and white pencil drawings. He likes that the chapters are short. Of course..

I think there are some older discussions here, but I used the American Pageant for AP history in 11th grade, and it really is an enjoyable text. Iirc, there are some recommendations for finding an older edition of it? Mine was brand new in 1996, so not very old.
I was only 16 and not Catholic, so I wasn't reading it like I would now, but I do recall enjoying it, and I have clear memories of many of the color illustrations that I associate with the text.

Oops. Just realized this is in the high school forum. For ds P&P is perfect. I'd say 7th or 8th grade. There is a text somewhat like it at the high school level. I'll check back here when I have more time to find the title. I am sure someone will mention it. Is it Sea to Shining Sea? That might have been elementary.

We used the information for the CLEP test in American History and supplemented with lots of historical movies and library books. My son didn't pass the test (which is for college credit anyway) but he came very close and he knows more American History than his public school friend. I learned a lot too!!

I do have Sea to Shining Sea but it is more of a middle school text.
Elena,
I would probably go that route.I have placed an order for the SAT II U.S History and will probably use that as spine. Do you happen to have a list of the movies and books your ds? I would love to see it.

We use The Teaching Company High School Early American course plus read books from the library - a lot of biography. Mostly, we watch movies and discuss them. Teach With Movies has recommendations.

My library has the Teaching Company Course and I have had it on hold forever. For some reason I haven't received it. I wish there was second part to the course that would cover the rest of AH. I noticed that is on sale so maybe I'll just buy it.

I just came from Goodwill and happen to come across a copy of American Pageant for 1.99. It is a 1979 edition so it is old but it gives me an idea of the book and for that price,I couldn't pass it up!
