I'm trying to help a friend, who is a single dad, find a Catholic high school for his 9th grade daughter. He is moving to take a job in DC (actually at Bolling and Suitland) and has no connections here except dh and myself. The other parent isn't in the picture at all, apparently, so he's on his own looking for a good school and place to live.

Of course, he doesn't want a hugely long commute either...he's a devoted dad, though, and plans to make his where-to-live choices after he finds a school for his daughter.

All help appreciated!

We had some friends at Trinity in Falls Church when we lived there. Dh applied to teach there as well and was quite impressed. I have a good friend with her 8th or 9th grader there now if you want me to put you in touch.

My cousin graduated from Bishop O'Connell in Arlington. He is a very conservative young man and really liked it. Also there is Bishop Ireton in Arlington as well, it is smaller.

There is an all girls school called Oakcrest, but is it pretty much on the other side of the Beltway from where he will be working. It is sort of affiliated with Opus Dei, and my god-daughter and a number of my friends daughters attend school there.

Nancy ... well, um, there is of course

dh's high school JP the Great which not only is loyal to the Magisterium, but has as a core requirement philosophy/bioethics as part of the four years! It's part of the Diocese which rocks because we have such a great bishop, Paul Loverde. There are buses (dh drives one from down here) that go to the school from Alexandria/Arlington area, from Holy Trinity/Manassas area and from down here (Fredericksburg area). It's growing and is a full high school with all activities, sports and academic mix that she could want.

Another option would be Seton Jr/Sr. High School ... which is where we sent Catie for her senior year (as JPtheGreat only had 9th and 10th at the time) and Maryan could certainly give you more info about that. It's not a dicoesan school but is affiliated with the diocese.

Another good one, altho very small, is down here in F'burg (about 45 min from DC but lots of vanpools/carpools and commuter buses run from down here): St. Michael the Archangel. We know some of the teachers and it's small and academically challenging while also remaining true to the Magisterium.

Almost anywhere around here is going to be a commute for either he or his daughter ...

Yes, especially to Suitland AND Bolling every week. Not my idea of fun.

We've done mid-year transfers and I know they're hard to pull off, so I am trying to give him lots of good options to pursue.

My daughter went to Oakcrest for three years and we really liked it. Is he military and living on base? I know when my brother lived on Bolling - there was a bus from Arlington diocese that came on base to pick up students.

Nancy - there is Stoneridge School of the Sacred Heart- it is in Bethesda. I have no idea about how orthodox it is or much about it - but I do know that it is one of the schools my husband thought about teaching in years ago.

Out of the schools mentioned, the only ones I would consider suitable for my own children are Trinity in Falls Church (not specifically Catholic but a good school), JP the Great and Seton in Manassas.

My friend is retired military but I doubt he will live on base. I will tell him about the bus, though. What a helpful service!

Yes, the bus is a helpful service because that is not an area of town you would want your kiddos riding public transportation! I think Oakcrest is going to move in the near future according to a friend. I am not sure in which direction. Stoneridge was not very orthodox a few years back and very pricey. But, things change. And it is near the metro. I have a friend who is a faithful Catholic who sends her daughters to Holy Cross Academy in Bethesda and is really pleased.

Moving high schoolers is no fun!

In DC itself, Georgetown, is Holy Trinity. I had a professor in college who sent her son there. She drove him from Reston into DC every morning and afternoon. She is very orthodox so I figured it must have been a good school for her to pass a handful of good Catholic schools along the way too.

My husband went to Bishop Ireton back when it was an all boys school. DH graduated in '91. I don't know much about it but he seemed happy with it. Of course that doesn't speak much about how it is today.

My husband commutes to Suitland and we live in Burke but we plan on having the kids go to Seton in Manassas so we have long commutes no matter which way we go about things. I think that's pretty much a fact of life in the DC area if you want an orthodox Catholic education in a spiritually sound environment. Holy Family Academy in Manassas is also very good but more on the Traditional side of things. Oakcrest and JP the Great are also excellent recommendations and I've heard very good things about Trinity in Falls Church even though it isn't Catholic.

I think almost all the students at Trinity are Catholic. My friend who sends her son there is actually Evangelical and that was her biggest concern--that her son would be in the minority. They love it, though.
