Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 16 yo son has been asking for good movies... he seems to dislike anything made more than a few years ago, just because it's "old".

Any suggestions? I'm so out of the loop with new movies...

Robin, what are his favorite genres? What are some of his interests? When I get a chance, I'll ask my teens - who are very into all sorts of movies - for their recommendations.

Love,

He seems to like anything, but especially war movies. He's always been really scientific and he loves nature...

My teens prefer the golden era of Hollywood type movies, but there are a few new movies they have enjoyed:

Master and Commander

The Patriot

Signs

Lord of the Rings series

Batman Begins is okay. My younger teen has watched this. I don't like the next one, it is very dark.

Saving Private Ryan is hard to take and has bad language, but we did let our son see it by 16. I think Black Hawk Down is too violent and disturbing, but ds did see it by 16.

The Village,by the same director as Signs, I think most of his movies are okay.

The Mask of Zorro, with Antonio Banderas

Men in Black is funny and not TOO rude. We don't do crude comedies around here.

I, Robot

I am Legend

Hancock (I think)

Can you tell we love Will Smith?!

I am pretty sure the Bourne movies (Bourne Identity, Supremacy, and the third?) are fine for his age. Dd 13 has been asking but we are waiting a couple more years.

Ocean's 11 and Ocean's 12, but NOT Ocean's 13!

What about the show 24? The first season is not for teens, but I think the others are *just* violent but don't have any explicit immorality although it is implied at times. I really enjoy the show and when my son was a younger teen (14 and up) we watched it together from Netflix. This will keep him busy for a while!

Good luck. It is a challenge. Dd 13 is getting to that age where she wants to branch out from the movies that we get for the family as a whole.

disclaimer- please preview and don't just take my recommendations! We all have different comfort levels. Netflix now has a rating system. I like to use screenit.com, too.

My daughter has jumped in to help:
The Spiderman series is pretty good.

She remembers that her big brother loves X-Men, which there are several of and more coming I believe. I hate sci-fi, so I have only seen the first one.

Transformers is a recent hit, better check the review on it because I don't know much about it. (Ds is 18 now)

Bulletproof Monk was okay, some implied stuff but nothing explicit.

Glory is an old one with Denzel Washington, but it is a powerful movie. Quite violent, though.

Air Force One, Independence Day (screen first), The Fugitive (should be fine for his age).

I remember watching the first Mummy movie and thinking it wasn't too bad. I know there is a more recent one. It is action-packed and kind of funny. Again, haven't seen it just throwing out ideas!

Sahara was pretty good.

That's all for now.

Bourne movies are popular here, too.

So are the Ocean's movies. I don't know if ds has seen all of them or not. These are dad movies.

Older boys will be bored, but younger barely teen boys like The Pacifier (more funny than anything else).

Also, School of Rock (one of the few with Jack Black that is not too crude) is fun for boys.

None of these movies are perfect, but the scenes in them that may be questionable are brief. Preview first.

Since you said war movies the first that came to mind is Finding Private Benjamin - it's very graphic but an excellent film.

The Patriot - historical Revolutionary war with Mel Gibson - again very graphic but good film.

Braveheart to - historical film, graphic, but good story and moral.

Those films are all R due to violence but they should spark some good discussions and maybe even encourage more study of the eras.

From my one teen...:

The Bourne Movies
The Ocean's Movies
Tombstone
Ironman

...who is mostly into comedy:

Get Smart
Ferris Buellers Day Off
Napoleon Dynamite
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Rush Hour

Mom note: We record many movies via Tivo/TV when they earn a TVPG/13 rating (which may not be a concern for your 16yo.)

Love,

Comedy: Galaxy Quest is huge over here! If he likes Star Trek even remotely, it's a must.
Mystery Men

We love Bourne. Master and Commander. Anything with Will Smith...something about that guy

Ironman, Transformers (there is a scene that is kind of long, meaning more than just a small mention, about m*sturb*tion, we flip through that one)

Sports ones: We are Marshall (love this!), Remember the Titans

Oh and Matrix, it is violent. Dh only fast forwarded through a couple of scenes in the second one. I think the first he left...it's just intense. But I imagine for a 16yrold boy it's probably not so bad.

How about the Horatio Hornblower series? We've gotten these from our library and Netflix.

I just rewatched the first one again and Horatio is 17 when he boards the ship as a Midshipman.
