Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thanks, Angie.

"The survey showed a strong relationship between analytic coursework and literacy. Students in two-year and four-year schools scored higher when they took classes that challenged them to apply theories to practical problems or weigh competing arguments."

Why this nearly defines homeschooling

Angie, I didn't see you had posted this article just before I posted a link to a similar article this morning.
It's pretty appalling stuff, eh?

Great minds post alike! On one hand it is awful stuff. On the other hand, it is reassuring that home educators are onto something...you know, that real learning stuff .

BTW, I can't be the only one NOT surprised by this report. Sheesh, after 6 years of college, I didn't consider myself well educated AND I was missing real life skills. I've learned more worthwhile things while fulfilling my vocation and home educating my children for sure. Sad but true.

Love,

This is very true, and I do think it's one of the reasons that many people are led to homeschool. We can address these issues on a very personal level.

This is from the article:
"The results cut across three types of literacy: analyzing news stories and other prose, understanding documents and having math skills needed for checkbooks or restaurant tips...They cannot interpret a table about exercise and blood pressure, understand the arguments of newspaper editorials, compare credit card offers with different interest rates and annual fees or summarize results of a survey about parental involvement in school."

These are skills that I hope my children have developed years before they go off to college....

Doesn't surprise me at all. When I was teaching Environmental Science labs at our local University I was blown away by the basic skills and knowledge the students did not have. What's more, they didn't seem to care that they didn't have it.

I guess they couldn't help it. After all, most of them were the products of our fine public school systems.
