Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My daughter and I are eager to get started on the Sunflower basket (MaryBeth's). I am having trouble finding some of the books, unless I want to pay $30+. This was on amazon.com.

I am currently searching half.com, but still not having much luck.

Our local library's website search engine isn't finding much either.

Help!!

Your sister in Christ,

Leocea

Okay, I finally have a minute to post this, lol.

I am also starting a separate thread for support and ideas for those following the curriculum.

I am looking for the following resources, or information/examples of substitutions you have used.

(prices in parentheses are the best prices I found)
*Botany in a Day (20.00)
*Anne's Anthology (20.00)
*You can become a Saint and the journal (cheapest found was 27.00 for both)
*The Botany Coloring Book (15.16)

Any/all ideas are welcomed!!!

Your sister in Christ,

Leocea

My ideas...

Botany
Sarah and I really enjoy Botany in a Day, but Mary Beth is now using Apologia's botany book. That might be an idea for you. Elizabeth really likes that book and so does Mary Beth. I don't know exactly which one, but I do know it's NOT the high school book. For Botany, if Botany in a Day and Apologia's Botany doesn't work for you, just substitute any botany spine you like or can find. Whatever fits in your budget, or you already have on your shelf is great! If you have Comstock's book of Handbook of Nature Study (which most do) and you don't mind doing a bit of connecting on your own, this would be plenty for a Botany spine. The information conveyed in those lessons provides a great foundation for Botany! You could also watch areas like Abebooks and Amazon's used site as well at the Trading Post here (I've seen it come up for sale occasionally) for a more affordable copy.

Anne's Anthology
While I enjoyed this book, Sarah found it took away from the joy of reading Anne and didn't pick it up unless I encouraged her to do so for a particular passage. If you have to drop a book - let it be this one!

You Can Become a Saint
I don't know about this one as we're not using it this year. It could be that it's oop and thus the higher price.

The Botany Coloring Book
This book is a treasure! This is one of the highlights of our days! It conveys information in a practical and understandable way, and the coloring engages the information to a visual! We love it. If you can, watch for a used copy, or just purchase this as you are able. I've never found anything that matches its level of detail!

Those are my thoughts. Don't be afraid to substitute with something that you already have on your shelves. When Elizabeth and I wrote this we were very motivated our individual girls and by things we already had on our shelves or things we already had experience with, and the changes in our two approaches generally reflect what one had and the other didn't. Good luck!

I think you have to watch for this one, because the price fluctuates wildly. Once this summer I checked on it, and the price was something like $18. I saved it to my cart to think about it, and when I came back, the price was some insane amount, like, $127... or something!!

Anyway, at that point I just figured that we could work with what we already had.

You can use the addall search engine to comparison shop for books.

Saves searching sites individually.

I heard from Elizabeth this morning and I'm dropping a few links in here as answers to your question, Leocea....

Mary Ann Budnik's books are both available from Sacred Heart Books.

So is the Botany Coloring Book....

Paula, it looks like the pages from the free journal are included in the notebook for sale, but they only make up a small part of it. (The journal forms 60 pages out of about 200.) In the notebook for sale, there are crossword puzzles, games, review questions, copywork, projects, and all the pages directly relate to whatever chapter they're supposed to be for. So there aren't really the blank templates included in the free journal. There are also a series of miniature books to cut out.

My 10 yo dd is using Apologia instead of Botany in a Day. The format makes it easier on us, but I'm not sure she's too into this notebook... she doesn't seem to be putting too much effort into it. But I think that's just her, and nothing really to do with the notebook.

Angela, thanks for the information! I think I will buy it, because my dd loves doing things like that, and I'm all about reinforcement....
