Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone used this for their family or with a group? Please let me know your thoughts on it.

Thanks

My 10 yo dd is using Pilgrims of the Holy Family and enjoying it. I originally bought the guide for my ds when he was 10ish because he had decided to quit Cub Scouts (bad group) and was a little depressed because of it. But my ds has a hard time getting motivated to do things on his own, so the program kind of fizzled with him... we don't have a Pilgrims group around here, and at the time there weren't enough kids available to start one.

My dd, on the other hand, is highly motivated and was feeling glum after my ds joined Boy Scouts, having found a decent group. So Pilgrims is working very well for her.

The badges are nice -- good quality -- and the requirements for the badges require real work. Some of them are not quite as tough as the Boy Scout merit badges, but they are not lightweight either. Most of the badges do correspond to Boy Scout badges -- which is nice because then you can use the Boy Scout merit badge booklets for information OR to update outdated requirements (as with the Pilgrim's Photography badge, for instance. Buy merit badge booklets here. You don't need to be a Boy Scout to buy anything from the Scout store.)

Anyway, some of the badges *are* a little outdated or their requirements are a little, I don't know... not what I would pick, kwim? (The Art and Plant Science badges spring to mind here for me.) But, if you're doing it on your own, I feel completely ok about replacing some of the requirements for certain badges with the equivalent Boy Scout badge.

And I do like the addition of faith-related badges, such as Charity, Virtue, Prayer, and Church History.

A few of the badges would probably be easier to get in a group -- like the Hiking, Camping, and Cycling badges, as these require a lot of work (and distance! ), or at least if the entire family is committed to doing them together. But most of the badges are doable for a family or a child going it alone, provided that child is motivated... or, I guess, if the parents are organized and committed about it.

I am writing the badges into my dd's curriculum (which is what I think CHC recommends in their middle school plans, isn't it?) Whatever she's working on counts as school work. You could build an entire science curriculum around the science badges.

Feel free to ask me any questions! There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of information out there, or people using the program, or... something.

Although there hasn't been a large number of 4 real folks using the program in the past, there is this old thread here where a few members share their experiences (including Angela when she first started   ) There isn't a ton of details there but at least it would give you an idea of who was starting to use it or was trying it, if you want to get more info.
