I love the CM approach but just don't feel comfortable enough with that yet and feel like I need to do SOMETHING with my son. I posted in How to discover a child's interests a little bit about him. Sorry I don't know how to link to other threads.
Anyway, he just turned 9 but he's not a very "mature" 9 year old in various ways academically, socially etc. He has always struggled with learning at a traditional school and needs a LOT, a LOT, a LOT of repetition to "grasp" concepts. Basic examples...he didn't even know his colors until he was almost 5-6, can read now but still very choppy, hasn't "mastered" his addition/subtraction facts and yet technically he's supposed to start moving into multiplication. It just takes him a looong time to think thru things and sometimes he just doesn't WANT to think thru things that are "too hard".
Soo, I guess my basic questions really are:
Since we're coming into homeschooling at this level of his education, is it ok to just buy the 3rd grader material from CHC?
Am I going to be missing out on previously taught material from their 2nd/1st/kinder. curriculums?
Are there items from these lower level grades you would recommend for a "struggling" learner?
Ideas/suggestions?
I'm listening....thank you,

We don't use CHC, so I can't answer that question, but I started homeschooling last year with my then 3rd grader. I wondered quite a bit about whether it was going to be o.k. since we hadn't done it/used this book or that book since Kindy, etc.
But it all went well. Not perfectly, we did have to make some curriculum changes mid-year, but well. Enough so that we are continuing to homeschool for 4th, in addition to teaching my now 2nd grader at home.
Good luck!

Here's the link to Kathryn's previous question about her son, in case that helps anyone give feedback: How to discover a child's interests

Welcome, Kathryn.
Yes, its entirely ok to use CHC's 3rd grade material with a 4th grader. One of the nice things about homeschooling is the ability to individualize. It doesn't mean you are "dooming" your child to be a year behind forever, either. Its easy enough to bump back up at some point before high school when the child is ready. You know your child best.
If you know someone who has the materials, it can be really helpful to look at them first as CHC has *very* strict rules about returns.
You can pm me if you'd like, for more specifics.

Hi Kathryn,
I am a new to homeschooling mom with a 3rd grade DS (he'll be 8 in August), so I have no words of wisdom, only a comrade. I also have a DD who will be starting K. By the sound of this post and the other one you linked too, our sons could be twins.
My story is differs only in I started my DS in school too early. His b-day is August 20th, the school cut off was 5 by September 1. He was ready academically, but NOT emotionally. My Aunt is an elementary school principal and told me to send him--he would be fine. I KNEW, but I listened to the "experts" (I love my aunt, but....)
Thus began the K-2nd grade roller coaster--every year the school wanted testing--insisting he was ADD/ADHD--wanting him medicated. Every year me having him tested and the tests coming back to show he was not ADD/ADHD, just acting his age, which happened to be a full year younger than some in his class. (he still got good grades).
I drew the line this year when I refused to have him tested again and they insisted he needed medication. I worked in Pharmacy for 20 years, I will not have my child medicated as a classroom management tool (for anything not just ADD/ADHD).
CJ, like your DS, would watch TV all day if I let him. We have severely cut down on his screen time (TV, games, computer) this summer. It was really hard on all of us at first--you know how those addicts can whine. But, it has gotten better. He also will not tell me his interests and when I take him to the library he picks out books well below his reading level--like level 1 books--so even that can turn into an argument.
Another thing that has help is tae kown doe (sp?). CJ is not very athletic, but he really likes this (and track).
We are enrolled with Kolbe this year, because my DH wanted an full enrollment school, at least for year 1. But, I do have the CHC lesson plans for 3rd and honestly, think MY DS would like them. (I like the tour the continents myself).
OK, I realize I have written I book and really didn't answer your question. I just wanted you to know you are not alone.
Feel free to PM me, maybe we can swap ideas for these boys of ours.
Anne
