Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Everyone!

After much agonizing, dh and I are planning to to enroll our two oldest dc, in 7th and 5th grades, with Kolbe on Monday (our Kindergartener is already enrolled with them). We have been using CHC materials with our two oldest, and while I really like the materials, it just isn't working for me to have to write out all the lesson plans, keep track of everything myself, etc., and I am finding myself burning out. Has anyone else started with Kolbe mid-year? If so, how did it go? Does anyone know if Kolbe will be able to help us blend the work our two dc have already completed for Quarters 1 and 2 with Kolbe materials for Quarters 3 and 4?

ANY advice, hints, experience, etc. anyone could share would be SO MUCH appreciated, as I am a little nervous!

God bless and thanks in advance!

~ Jen

Jen -- FWIW, we did Kolbe for a year + half and the kids liked it and really did well with it. We did start them at the beginning of the year (but stopped to send them to dh's school), but eveyrone we ever dealt with at Kolbe were great and very understanding. Just talk to someone -- they're very cooperative. My brother and SIL have used them from K-12 for their oldest (and the other 9 right behind) and have always been pleased with their helpfulness and program in general.

Hope this helps.....

Ditto talking to Kolbe - they will help. We didn't start midyear - but mid- high school. Since you do not have to use their plans or even do everything on their program, I would be really surprised if they couldn't help you blend the two.

We are using a mix of Kolbe and CHC for our 8th grader - but signed up for Kolbe. I imagine all you have to do is send in two samples of work per quarter for whatever you want to roll over from CHC but talk to the proctor for specifics. Use from each what works. They were very helpful to me to keep me from overburdening our dc in the temptation to try and play "catch up" as if we were behind because we hadn't done all the neat stuff in 9th and 10th grade. The proctor kept reminding me of the importance of doing work well and not worrying if we don't do everything. They were very helpful in focusing on what we had accomplished and moving forward at a pace appropriate for us. They were also good about helping us discern when to wrap something up so we didn't burn out.

Hope you have a great year.

Janet

I just wanted to let everyone know that I spoke with Dianne Muth at Kolbe yesterday. She was wonderful! Kolbe will let the boys enroll for just the last two quarters of the year (which saves a lot of $), but we will still receive all of the lesson plans, etc., so that we can tailor the final two quarters. I purchased some books from Kolbe for history and religion, plus Easy Grammar for my 7th Grader who struggles a bit in that area (I will still continue to do Lingua Mater with him, but at a slower pace). Dianne gave me some great ideas for getting the boys on track for Kolbe for next year, including just doing the history and Bible history as a read aloud instead of having them do all of the written exercises. I am extremely pleased with the whole experience. Kolbe was totally open to bringing the boys in mid-year and letting me use whatever material of their suggested curriculum and what I already have to finish out the year. This is definitely the type of support I am needing as I look ahead to high school for our oldest in a couple of years!

Thanks to all of you for your help!

God bless!
