My library has NO books by Thorton Burgess, Sybil von Olfers and several other classic authors. Very limited Tasha Tudor. I have filled out book "request to purchase forms" with no luck so far.

If my children are going to enjoy these books, I am going to have to buy them. (ILL cost $2 per book- even if they can't get me the book they still charge for the request).

Which books by these authors would you call "must haves"?.

Amazon has the Burgess Flower book for Children, but it starts about $28 per copy.

I have a limited budget and scour the thrift stores..

You should be able to find these used, and I would definitely go that route. Try Amazon (used), buy.com, ebay, or half.com. Remember the shipping charge. Amazon has the Burgess Bird Book for 3.19 used. Also,   The Baldwin Project has at least the bird book online for free, and maybe others as well.

You may also want to check out Project Gutenberg and
Librivox for the Burgess books. I know that they don't have his flower book.

Another place where I have bought from is Alibris. I would try to buy used if you are unfamiliar with the author. However, as Caroline stated, check out the shipping charges. Sometimes I've ended up buying new from Amazon because I could get more for the same amount of money plus free shipping.

Yesterday I was going through my booklists for sources of materials, so your timing is just perfect. I just posted this yesterday. Yesterday's Classics reprints the Burgess Books. Also Dover has the small books for very cheap of the stories like Jimmy Skunk and Reddy Fox.

To save even more, Sacred Heart Books and Gifts always has books for 15% off, and carries all the Burgess titles.

For free, Google Books has some full view of his stories, here, including Mother West Wind stories.

And still free, The Burgess Bird Book and Animal Book plus others are online in different versions.

I was also going to say that I would use ILL for the picture books that aren't being replicated like Sybil Von Olers and Tasha Tudor. I don't think the former is absolutely necessary.

I love Tasha Tudor, but her doll books fall flat with my son. If he is engaged by some of the titles, then I'd pursue a bit more. We love Around the Year, Pumpkin Moonshine, and A Time to Keep -- those are the ones we go back to again and again.

We bought the Burgess books from Dover at a reasonable price and they have been WELL WORTH it! I would HIGHLY recommend those. They got my ds into chapter books and they are read over and over again.

I am curious. Does the reprint of the Burgess' flower book have the color and black & white illustrations of the original? I would hate to buy the reprint if it costs $28 and not get the illustrations!
