Has anyone done this--sort of the opposite of accelerated graduation? It seems like a natural solution for my ds (only 12 now, but I'm trying to think ahead to make sure he's ready for hs in two years).
He is young for his age (he has Asperger Syndrome) and could use the extra time to grow up. It would also be nice to spread the required courses over five years because he gets stressed easily and needs lots of downtime and time to explore his own interests. That's why I'm thinking of spreading it out rather than finishing on time and having him take a year off.
Are there downsides to this I'm not thinking of? Would colleges see him as a slacker or something if I give them a five-year transcript eventually? Any thoughts?

I don't see anything wrong with this. I have heard that some students take what's called a "super senior" year, or something like that. Essentially, they take an extra year in order to really jam pack their transcript before applying for college. So there is some precedent for it.

That's essentially going to be our plan for dd13. She would be in 8th grade next year, but wants to start high school coursework. I don't see letting her graduate early, although she will probably begin college level work at the community college while still at home.

We are doing this.
Only I tacked the extra year of high school on the 8th grade year.
He'll either finish after 10th grade in 3 years and go to CC at 16, or he can finish high sch after 12 grade in 5 years and go to CC when he's 18. Or somewhere in between
But he's earned some units a year early just in case he needs to stretch out the high school education

This is my plan, too. If dd isn't ready for cc level yet after 10th, we'll add another year and then re-consider for 12th grade. Either way, she'll be home the full 4 yrs, but won't necessarily be homeschooling formally with me after 10th or 11th.
This is what I'm thinking about doing after 10th, if all goes well.

I think we're basically going to end up doing this as well -- having hs from 8th - 12th grades. He'll turn 13 next month, and although he's ready for some high school level coursework, in other areas, he has learning disabilities. And due to his other special needs, he could use more time to mature. But I want to give him credit for the academic work he does, so... it looks like high school will be 5 years for us.
