I joined a protestant hs group last year out of desperation for my older boys to meet some other homeschool kids their own age and interests.
I had considered joining their coop for the social aspect, but lo and behold EVERY subject in the coop is being taught with BJU materials (some of which I would have to buy).
Someone from the group (who I do not know that well) called me to ask a question about my fil's business and asked what classes my boys were taking for coop.
I hadn't planned on saying anything, afterall, there's only about 7 catholics in the group and only about 3 are actually practicing catholics and I knew it was protestant when I joined, kwim? Their group, they can do what they want.
So, I just said the truth, that, as a Catholic, I simply cannot stomache the BJU hatefullness towards catholics, much less fund it by buying the materials and paying for my kids to take a class with it.
She seemed genuinely shocked to learn of this and ask if I could site my information and specificly site where int eh texts there is anti-catholic sentiments.
I sent a CAF link to her, but since I don't use BJU I can't site the books.
Can anyone help me out on that?
I doubt they are going to not use these materials (it's all already been purchased and people have already enrolled), but she seemed sincere n her desire to avoid being anti-catholic for the sake of not teaching her children errors or unchristian attitudes.
It was actually a very pleasant conversation. whew.

Here's a site where they talk about their anti-Catholic stance (scroll down a ways, it's addressed in its own question): http://www.sullivan-county.com/news/bob_jones/bju.htm

Aubrey,
Thank you for this link.
Martha,
I have several relatives who have left the church, but do not consider themselves antii-Catholic. They use BJU materials. I may save this link for future reference if this subject ever comes up. The last quote in Aubrey's link from the Catholicism section says it all:
"We love the practicing Catholic and earnestly desire to see him accept the Christ of the Cross, leave the false system that has enslaved his soul, and enjoy the freedom of sins forgiven that is available for any of us in Christ alone."
All I can say is...well, I am speechless!

I personally previewed Bob Jones high school level World History. I borrowed the book from a local friend to take a look for a Catholic friend who was joining a coop that was using it.
It was positively *hateful*, Martha. I use all sorts of protestant materials and we have many many prot. homeschool friends. I don't consider myself the KIC type at all.
Within the first 5 chapters, I found very little actual world history...mostly protestant religion. The text took a lot of time to "explain" Catholic doctrine (they were setting it all up for their intro. to the reformation, I think) such as sacrament, purgatory, the idea of priests, etc. I read out loud to my friend on the phone and we were both pretty shocked. Its much much worse than any Abeka text I've reviewed.
As a complete aside, I also understand now why protestants consider BJU Press to be easier than Abeka. It was very "lite", imho, for a high school text.

One instance I recall was in the HS Biology text, where the Church was criticized for condemning the Nestorian heresy. Apparently, BJU doesn't realize that the heart of that heresy was an attack on the divinity of Christ. The Nestorians looked like the heroes! There were also some very critical comments about monks in that section, too. I had hoped that by now they would have edited that out, as it was historically and doctrinally inaccurate. I would not use BJU materials after our encounter with HS Bio.
