Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Homeschool Workboxes idea have me thinking...

I was tempted to run out and set up that system but then I realized that we really do our work together as a family.

What was SO appealing to me about that system was the fact that it would hold ME accountable. I liked the idea of using all of those resources that often sit unused. I liked the concept of seeing the empty boxes and knowing they needed to be filled.

I have tried setting up shelves with activities and that did not work in the long run. What works for us is a combination of their pursuing their own independent ideas and my initiation of learning activities (as in "OK, now we are going to do X")

Then, I realized that I wanted a better way to store some of the math manipulatives we have. I looked at my scrapbooking cart with the drawers that close.

Why not set up a math/logic cart with 7 drawers containing different manipulatives and activities? Each day we could grab a drawer and explore/work together. That way I will see the empty drawers and fill them up with new activities.

Then I thought- why not try that with some basic fun science experiments, too? Another cart with seven drawers of prepared science experiments (like the simple ones from the Usborne books or something similar). Again, I would have to grab the household items and put them in the drawer so they were ready to go- and we would actually do them more often.

Before I go and spent the money (Target has reasonably priced carts) and the time setting it up, I wanted to see if anyone has any advice.

Thanks.

Blessings,
Tracey

I think that sounds great! I am trying to picture the carts you have in mind. Like you, we do most of our work together (mostly because I only have two doing "school"). So it doesn't make sense for me to think up that many different activities for each person, but I like your idea of organizing the materials in a way that we can all use them together. Let us know how it works out!

When I was in elementary school, my favorite subject was science. We had a cardboard chest with lots of drawers in it, and in each drawer were ziplock bags, each one containing all of the materials to do a science experiment. Each bag had a number on it that matched with the experiment you were supposed to perform. I have no idea why I thought this was so incredibly awesome, but I think you are definitely onto something with the math/science box idea. I bet your kids love it!
