Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Any opinions on whether it is a good idea to try to do the subjects with just the books they use (early grade materials, not physics or anything) without registering or ordering the course plans?

I'd go for it.

You don't really get a discount for buying it all at once, so if you think midway you need more, you can order the course plans then.

In fact, many people do this even in the upper grades for some subjects.

Thanks, Martha. That makes a lot of sense -- I think we'll be doing that.

Theresa, it really depends on what you are looking for. There are some things - composition teacher's manuals that you cannot get without being registered. Other things, like the Grammar or such it is fairly easy to just use the book. A lot depends on the grade you are looking at, what kind of support you are looking for and how many ideas or plans you need, if any. I tend to wing things totally on my own with the youngers using things here and there from Kolbe. Then depending on when the child is ready for more, I sign them up for Kolbe for the plans and support and the lesson plans - but I'm a math, history person, so I really need more support than most in the literature, composition area. If you are confident yourself with this aspect (lots of folks on this board are writers - they probably don't need a guide to remind them of things to pay attention to about writing - I do). For history, I've never really liked anyones plans and tweak my own or do things my own way. With this, I wouldn't need to order anything from Kolbe in the younger grades, for sure. I like having their plans for ideas and some nice, neatly written background summaries and such - but don't follow things precisely.

It is a time saver to me to have theology/religion plans mostly because of the association of Catechism questions with Faith and Life - but I don't follow things exactly - for one thing, I have the older books, which imo were much more beautiful. I've not used the AB much with any except the scatter brain who seems to benefit from being required to write it all down. It is something I don't think I have to have - so I don't sign a child up just for those plans, but when I need the extra support with the areas I'm really weak in (like composition/ paper grading -not the grade so much as the suggestions for ways to improve and science once we are passed experiments and projects and 3 part cards, then I sign them up and gladly take and modify whatever else is there.

Hope this helps. But don't start out with full blown enrollment - order what you need, when you need it. Most books, you can get more cheaply elsewhere. They do have some really good audio lectures in high school now.

Oh and keep up with each of these providers - every one of them have changed things with time and I have found that they have implemented some changes that we suggested (and probably other folks must have made the same suggestions).
