Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm wanting to update our Netflix queue, and the girls (12,10)and I have watched Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice together - and loved them! What else can I add that would be along the same lines that's appropriate for their ages too?

I really liked North and South and Wives and Daughters for that age group.

We really enjoyed the BBC version of David Copperfield

I seond Sense and Sensiblity. My girls and I watched this last week. I didn't really like the book but the movie was wonderful. My girls, even my 6 yr. old, enjoyed it.

I just wanted to mention that the Masterpiece Theatre version (recently on PBS) of Sense and Sensibility opened with a scene that I don't think would be appropriate for girls in that age group.

I know--how did they manage it? They didn't leave to the imagination Willoughby and his affair with Col Brandon's niece.

I was actually just coming back to say you might preview my suggestions. There is a rather violent scene at the beginning of North and South and I forgot about another scene of a man committing suicide. You will want to skip those scenes. I usually skip them myself and forgot

Also, in Wives and Daughters, you might find one scene where a girl is being wooed by an older man a bit old. It is tastefully done considering, but since yours are young, it doesn't leave quite so much to the imagination as in P&P (though, the actual sin isn't so far).

Mrs. M, I didn't see the beginning of the movie (neither did my children) so thank you for alerting us to that.

Whoa!

The one I recommended was the old BBC version

Thanks for the heads up.

I'm wondering if these shows have a BBC version as well, and are they "safer"? I think JE and P&P that I watched was BBC, not Masterpiece Theater, now that I think about it. I just watched Emma from Masterpiece, though, and we liked it.

I think that Masterpiece Theater simply produces or co-produces things with the BBC to distribute them to an American audience. The movies are often the same.

So many things are relative, too. I probably would have watched the movies I mentioned without editing as a 12 year old and perhaps 10, but I wanted to warn you because I'm not sure how I would feel as a parent. I think that though I felt very sheltered, my parents were more lenient in this than I tend to be.
