I know we've discussed the Little House books but one that I never liked when we read the whole series: Farmer Boy is a GREAT READ ALOUD when you read it away from all the others. When we tried reading it in the midst of Laura's stories, it just didn't work. But the kids loved it when we read it separate.
And it really is an interesting look at a successful farming family in post-Civil War New York is really interesting ... but don't read it if you're hungry: there are tons of references to food!

We just did that one before Christmas, and we all loved it. It was my husband's favorite growing up, and we actually read it before starting the Little House series. It really was amazing to realize how well off the Wilder family was at that time! And yes, lots of food references

We've been reading this because the boys cringe when I bring out the other books! We actually stopped mid-story to read some other books...and it's sitting there with a bookmark waiting for us to return.

we LOVED this book - it really appealed to my boys - so much so that sammy wanted to be farmer boy when he grew up!

I started with Farmer Boy, read by Cherry Jones to get ds to enjoy it. That has helped reading the rest.

I am reading this aloud to my girls now and have read at least 2 times previous to other kids. It is a hard thing to do to transition from Laura to Almanzo and back. We left Laura out on the prairie just after her family got kicked off Indian Territory. They were homeless and wandering....again. Then we started reading Almanzo and it just felt wrong. But now we are REALLY into Almanzo! It will be hard to go back to Laura again.
Mary, which titles would you read to a 6 and 8 year old? I know I don't want to read those few at the end that are more of interest to older kids and adults. But where to draw the line? Long Winter?

I LOVE this book and have read it to my boys several times. We love to have Farmer Boy meals while reading the book and the boys can't get enough cider, popcorn, and apples while I read!

We love this book, too. I've probably read it aloud at least 3 times all the way through (some of our children seem to come in "sets") and then every Christmas at some point we read aloud the Christmas chapter. It's so funny! I'm really looking forward to reading it again....maybe 2 more times?

I listened to this with my son Luke a couple of months ago. He liked it a lot, but I think he missed Laura and Mary which kept him from liking it more.
Luke commented that all Almanzo did was eat and he was right. There was a lot of eating in this book! With all those chores he was bound to be hungry! Luke and I talked about how differently Laura and Mary ate. There simply wasn't the variety of foods that the Wilder family had.
I think my favorite part is when Almanzo asks his father for money to buy lemonade and his father surprises him by giving him a half-dollar but gives Almanzo the option of buying a lemonade that will be gone quickly or a piglet to raise. Am I getting that right? Anyway, I thought there were some good lessons on responsibility in this book.
It's a fantastic book and by itself apart from the other Little House books it's truly wonderful.
