Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was thinking about this thread yesterday and realized that the book that has had the greatest influence on my homeschooling philosophy isn't a homeschooling book at all.

I first read this book as a teenager, but I have read it many, many times since then. The author was not homeschooled, but her account of her growing-up both reminds me of what I loved so much about my own homeschooled childhood and captures the kind of freedom for Real Learning that I want for my kids.

What not-specifically-about-education books inspire your homeschooling philosophy?

Thanks for bringing this book to our attention, Sara.
Unfortunately my library doen't have a copy so it had to go on my "wish list".

Thanks for the suggestion, as well. I need some inspiration.

Peace.

The non homeschool books that really inspired me to homeschool were:

eight cousins- I also love this one for body image. I loved that her uncle had her taking "pills" that were really bread, that he wanted her out of doors, that she couldn't wear tight waists, and that her cousins told her how silly her friend was for following the current fashions instead of being sensible.

The Secret Garden. Unschooling at its best

I read both of these when I was young, but they both made a big impact on me.
