I consider myself a relaxed HS. Yet, I seem to have established a pattern of panic in late December/early January where I want plans, checklists, schedules and lots of academics on the calendar for January.
I am not sure if this is because we seem to loosen up in December (i.e. I tend to be busy with making gifts, baking, etc. and I slack off on my own HS responsibilities) or if it is because winters are COLD here and we spend so much more time indoors or something else?
Can anyone else relate?
Have you found a way to avoid the panic or should I just go ahead and get on with it, make the plans, implement them for a few weeks and then get back to our relaxed way of doing things?

I feel this way, too. I think for me it is definitely related to how loose we get in December, and the fact that my second quarterly reports are due in the middle of January! (Man, I hate those things!) Also, I think it's part of that "start over fresh in the new year" feeling I get, where I want to do more organizing and things of that nature (particularly because it is so very cold here in the winter and we spend a lot of time indoors.)
This is only my second January hs'ing, so we'll see how it goes this year!

I definitely do just about the same thing - I always give in and do it and as long as it doesn't "rule" me I use it as an opportunity to just refresh where we are at and see that we are really on track... And I think that after the holidays and such, a bit more structure than usual can help to get back into things. Again, as long as it doesn't rule the household, it seems to work (around here anyway!).

Must be a common feeling. Mine stems from quarterly reports due and also from knowledge and experience. Up until December we are all enthusiastic learners. Around December and approaching spring, we really have a hard time staying focused. Plans are a lifesaver as long as we keep them reasonable with the reality that as soon as the wonderful mild days approach we don't want to do anything but be outdoors and if we have a checklist we are motivated to focus and get done and have fun. It helps us avoid the ending school by simply petering out.

I have learned to go with the feeling  I use Jan and Feb to do the seat work that I feel we "need" to accomplish each year. We don't leave the house much as I hate driving in snow/ice, so we curtail most extra curriculars. This is the perfect time of year to "catch up" (Not sure what I am trailing behind  )
Then spring comes, and we ignore school except on rainy days.

We live in WI. So, I too plan for more serious studies and a longer checklist of things to do in Jan and Feb.. I always tell the kids that we might as well work hard when it is nasty outside so when Spring comes we can enjoy it. Even when schools are out for snow days we keep plugging along. The boys get it. Sure, there are nice afternoons when we take off and sled because there are just so few nice days here in winter; but, for the most part it is nose to the grindstone.
When I planned for the year I kept this in mind and inserted more intense lessons for this time (human body study and Asia and Europe as continents).

Our school year begins in late Jan/early Feb. I spend early Jan planning and in those first ten weeks back I believe we get more formal schooling done than any other term of the year.
