I've dabbled in almost all of the major educational philosophies, but I'll admit I'm overhwhelmed by the amount of Montessori material out there. So... if you could pick 1 book and 1 website for beginning to work with this model, what would you recommend?

Montessori Materials
(okay that was two, but the second one is all about downloadable files and materials)
The books are trickier.... Depends on what you want - more the philosophy, the methodology... or practical "here's what to do, what to make" etc.
I personally loved Hainstock's books when I first started (though I suggest editing the patterns for the sandpaper letters and numbers) - from there, even when I've ended up doing something different, I do not regret what I previously did with it (I've since been AMI trained)
Now, when I get MY book finished, I'll recommend THAT one. The topic: Catholic Montessori Homeschooling - on a shoestring budget, fully Catholic, methodology AND practical how-to's... it is actually started, but it's a spare time project right now....

There is a lot!! I started reading the Clio Montessori series when my oldest was born and while reading the first source is always valuable -- but these days as my time is limited, so my favorite books have to be super practical these days.
But one? Sarah - I'd have to go with four?? Sorry. Limiting myself isn't my strength. You should see me at Lent. 
Books: both Hainstock books (preschool and school years) and both of Barbara Curtis' Mommy Teach Me books. 
Website: Some ladies here are so helpful as well as Lori's Montessori for Everyone. From there, I move through her links.

Play and Learn
Read and Write
are excellent books as well for getting started, though some of the activities are more "extras" than keys, but they are all really fun.

I find it very inspiring- it's so helpful to see Montessori in action. I use a lot of her ideas- they are very easy to set up.

For the overwhelmed anxiety-riddled Mommy, such as myself, nothing beats the simplicity and practicality of Barbara Curtis' Mommy, Teach Me books. After reading so many titles and feeling so overwhelmed this book finally allowed me to relax!

If I had to send you one place online to begin looking at Montessori, I'd send you to Lori as mamamoon did..Montessori For Everyone - Her blog has undergone a major face lift resulting in a very organized and easy to follow set of categories over on the side. What makes Lori so valuable is that she herself is a trained Montessori teacher and is now homeschooling her two children using Montessori materials and philosophy. So her approach is full of wisdom but also realistic in terms of application in the home setting.
Now, for a book, if I have to only recommend one to get you started, I guess I'd go with Barbara Curtis' Mommy, Teach Me. If you're looking to dig into more of the philosophy, I'd say you'd have to read some of Maria Montessori herself as well as a lot of other great reads out there. There would be too much to narrow down to just one, or even a couple. If you're looking to dig into philosophy, it would be a great summer project - you could start building your library basket now.
Ok, see I can't recommend just one book - the Hainstock books really are very helpful as well.
