I saw the thread and thought I'd post about our uniform experiences this year (so far) but the thread was already so long, I didn't think anyone would see my post.
Anyway . . .
We bought uniforms this year. I hesitated for a long time and made half-hearted attempts b/c, while I think they're cute, I thougth they were kind of . . . wannabe.
sorry. Well, my daughter's pleas prevailed. We just went to the local uniform shop. In the front is the new section and in the back is the consignment section. We went straight to the consignment section. What we discovered is that these uniform skirts and jumpers are made of some kind of NASA-designed freakishly non-stain, non-fade, non-shrink, et c material. The tops were almost all cotton and, therefore, mostly faded or faded cum school logo. I just let my daughter choose 4 of her favorites which turned out to be a jumper and three skirts. We bought the shirts new. We're planning to make t-shirts for Fridays.
I LOVE THESE UNIFORMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I never would have thought it but I love them!
1) I am doing so much less laundry. I consider us somewhere in the somewhat messy end of the spectrum when we do stuff for school. We get dry erase marker on our clothes when we do board work. We get paint on our clothes when we paint. We get everything on us when we do anything. We're mess magnets but I tell you true, these uniforms are mess repellants! Nothing sticks to them! Previously, we'd get up and dress. By noon mass we'd have to change b/c something was on my daughter's clothing and now she wasn't suitable for mass. We'd come home and do some more school and b/f our evening outing, have to change again b/c again, she was covered in something. Now, of course this means that we're having a grand time in school but it also means I'm doing a ton of laundry. NO MORE! The tops do tend to attract a bit of mess but we solved that with an apron.
2)She just looks so dadgum cute in them!
3)No more decision making. She launders her uniforms on Friday afternoon or on the weekend and hangs them up on the door in the order she wants to wear them. She hasn't yet worn them in that order but I just say, "now get dressed, Lovey." AND IT HAPPENS w/o comment.
4)We are now altogether put together and ready to go, matching and clean at any given point during the day; even early. I just love that. Sometimes I'd say to go dress now and she'd come out with a red top she outgrew two years ago and a pair of purple polkadot pants that she hasn't yet grown into (and I'd let her wear them -- more laundry when mass time comes!) No more; she matches and looks lovely from the git-go.
What I don't like so much.
They were expensive but now that we've cut down so much on laundry, I don't care! They're worth it!
Length. GIVE ME A BREAK! It seems that it isn't a good Catholic school uniform unless a little hiney shows. I'm so ashamed for them. I have noticed this about town but thought it personal preference on the part of the girl or her parents. When we bought my daughter's I actually had to buy 14s and pin them in (she wears an 8). There was actually one jumper my daughter wanted but we couldn't get it b/c buying it large enough to be long enough made it too large elsewhere. One jumper looks very nice in the larger size but the opening on the sides actually goes to her hip bones. I also made sure there was plenty of hem to let out. I wish I could just buy decent cloting in decent lengths but that's another post.
From other homeschoolers I get, "Oh, I never thought you'd put her in school." or, "OH! Mary Grace is in school now?" That'll wear off, though. We're also asked pretty frenquently if she goes to X school since she's wearing that uniform. That one is a little harder and is one of the reasons I didn't want to go with uniforms. It doesn't bother my daughter in the least, though, and she just says, "No, this is my homeschool uniform."
Everyone we know thinks it's the pinnacle of coolness. I'm not convinced about that but man, oh man, I love doing less laundry and fussing less in the morning over what my little one will wear.
Now that I know what I know, I won't hesitate to buy them again. I would like to find a cheaper source but even if I don't I'll still gladly buy them. Also, once a few years ago someone posted a pic of Catholic school uniforms that were sooooo darling and the skirts were LONG! I'll actually go to the trouble of finding out who they were and where the uniforms came from.
so, our uniform experiences: We love them and higly recommend them!

That's awesome! We've decided to go the uniform route this year too. Especially since we will be getting them as hand-me downs. I'm really looking forward to not having my daughter agonize about what to wear for 20 minutes only to come out looking like Pippi Longstocking. I mean, it's fine for around the house, but I do think it's important for a 6 year old homeschooler to look presentable when we go out in public. Thanks for sharing your success story. I can't wait and I think our dd will be excited too.

I'm sold! I was just at Target.com looking at the uniforms there and wondering if that's what we should do this year. The Target uniforms seems quite reasonable by the way, although I haven't actually seen one other than the pictures on the website. They have some longer skirts too.

My dd6 wanted uniforms SO BAD. We got some from Old Navy, and she LOVES them. It is so cute. We got ds9 some too but he could care less, clothes are clothes, and as long as they are soft and tagless, whatever. They look so nice and put together.
Now, I just have to work on me

I'm with you. I need a uniform that will repel dirt and stains, won't wrinkle, and just looks so dadgum cute on me. I just dont' want it to look like a uniform.
