I just realized that about 90% of my "lesson plans" are executed during (or just after) meals. Sometimes, they take place during a snack. We used to move to the couch quite a bit but it always seems that someone is still eating. So, does anyone else "meal school"? Maybe it should be "food schooling" since we also work with snacks!

me... my toddlers gain tons of weight as soon as we start school. If their mouths are full, it's quiet enough for me to read, etc.

We are such meal schoolers! I feel most in control when the toddlers are strapped in one place, the bigger boys are anchored to a certain spot, and everyone's mouths and hands are busy! Sometimes I feed them just so we can get school done !

LOL! We definitely do read-alouds during meals, or play CD's like SOTW, Jim Weise stories, or Story of Classical Music.

Years ago my husband was working night shifts so the kids and I fell into a routine of having a very casual dinner each night where I'd do all our read-alouds, poetry, picture study, and Bible lessons. It was a couple of the best years of homeschooling! I am a great supporter of homeschool over meals. My kids still talk about those years with great fondness, but they prefer to have dad home for dinner these days.

We also do a lot of meal schooling! We do our unit study reading during snack (immediately followed by any activities so no one has a chance to wander off!), some lesson is always attached to "tea time"/afternoon snack. I think meal times are a lovely, natural way to shift gears to a new subject. And, like someone else said, it's easier to do a read aloud if everyone's mouths are full

I thought we were the only ones. And you know in the winter since they stay in more we are baking and doing school, cooking and doing school.
The girls love it!!
But it is expensive because they graze all day.

We moved our schooling from our downstairs room into our dining room (next to the kitchen) because I was constantly stopping to get someone food or drink. I'm thinking now it would be a good idea to have a snack, drink, simple lunch shelf set up in the fridge and pantry so there would be minimal disruptions.
God bless,
Mary-NY
