Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

13 yr old ds wrote "Africa" for the answer to an antonym for miniscule. And yes, he knows what an antonym is, what miniscule means and the word "vast", which he had just defined was right next to that section.

My 4th grader refuses to write anything. Literally. He threw a screaming fit when told to write his name on an assignment. No amount of encouragement, crafty fun inspiration, or bribe will entice him to willingly write. He actually writes well and neatly once I nearly cattle-prod him to do it. But I hate being a cattle-prodding mom!

I go feed the fish in the koi pond and sweep the back patio. A usually relaxing and destressing 5 minute event. I wasn't out there 2 minutes before I can hear 3 kids screaming in an argument inside and then hear a blood curling scream from the 2 yr old that instantly caused ominious silence in all her siblings and an even more foreboding, "oh no. Mom's gonna blow now for sure." 2 yr dd was on her way down the stairs trying to get to mom-feeding-fish and baby girl got knocked down the stairs by other siblings running. Poor dear's entire forehead is one big double egg-sized lumpy bruise and her left checkbone is really red, so it might bruise up later. It looks like she slid down the stairs on the left side of her face and landed on the tile bottom with her forehead? She seems fine and all, but it sure looks horrid and I'm sure she's going to have a whopper of a headache for the rest of the day.

To top it off, in my rush to run in to the house, I tripped over the dog, knocking him in the koi pond. And no one thought to NOT let the algae and fish flakes covered wet dog in the house.

On the up side, if this is just the first week of our school year, it's just got to get better - right?

Well, I'm with Kacky... the first part sounded horrible, and I sympathised with you a WHOLE lot.

Then you mentioned the dog, and I just laughed... I'm sorry, I couldn't help it!!

That being said, I hope it just goes a lot better from here on in!

Well, I was all hyped and ready to go to park this morning to meet some new hs-ing people.
I was even going to be about 20 minutes early.
Then this stupid truck pulling a flatbed trailer acted stupid and dumped part of its stupid load across lanes into traffic.
And wouldn't you know that the only decorator concrete brick to land on my side of the road landed right under my front left tire and busted it.
I had to pull right into a parking lot and call dh to come change the flat.
No worries though because thanks to my gung-ho attitude, we had plenty of time to change a flat and still get to park.
Then Dh came and even with his drills couldn't get the caps off.
So he dropped the oldest 4 home with his little pontiac sunfire while I waited with the other 4 for him to come back and shuttle us home too.
Now he's calling AAA to come fix the flat, the LAST thing any man wants to do. 1 because no man likes to admit he can't fix a flat tire for his woman and 2 we really cannot afford to pay for it. (We didn't have a membership, but do now because it was cheaper to get a membership than pay for a single trip out.) All rather humbling to him and THAT has put him in a rather yucky mood.

I'm so disappointed. We were so excited to meet those new families. 3 had children my older boys' ages, which they don't come across very often and all of them had girls for my 7 yr old dd.

It's got. to. get. better.
Just got to.

Oh, Martha.

I feel so bad for you.

And I really hope your week gets better! Soon!

(and I have to be honest, I am still baffled at the "Africa" answer. But, my ds would do the same type of thing...)

Oh no!! Perhaps you can make the truck company pay for the repairs?
And maybe you could invite the family over for tea one day. Perhaps next week, which is sure to be better!!

Martha...don't even attempt anything remotely resembling schooling tomorrow...that's the only advice I can come up with (and it's what I'd do )

This is sort of a downer story but...you know the best days don't last either. I'll never ever forget my best hs day...we got all the work done, we read, we played, went outside, I did all the chores, had dinner ready, it was perfect. Why I remember it so well? It was Sept. 10, 2001. Nothing stays the same ever! (Like I said, sort of a downer, but ykwim!)

Oh and on the bright side...at least those bricks didn't land on your hood...that's what I was afraid you were leading up to...yikes!

Can I whine right along with you? That sounds like the way my day is going today. I even burst into tears on the interstate because I just wanted to get some chickens to cook for supper.

I won't go into the rest right now because I just got home with the chicken, but they're frozen and supper is in two hours.

Oh Martha and Loren!

I *really* hope it gets better.

Definitely go do something *fun* tomorrow -- even if it's just stomping in the sprinkler or eating ice cream for lunch.

This sounds like a sit com for homeschoolers, or a book for homeschoolers waiting to be written!

Martha, I hope you can still find the blessing in each day, even in the trials. We had a day like this this week too when our car stalled at every light, and I was on the way to sell curriculum at a used curriculum sale, etc. etc. It all turned out fine in the end, but was extremely stressful at the time!

I just watched Larry King Live last night. Steven Curtis Chapman and his family were on last night. He is a christian musician/singer whose 17yo son Will accidentally ran over their 5 year old daugher, Maria Sue in May. I remember feeling sick to my stomach praying for them then, knowing what they must be going through, and feeling a special need to pray for their 17yo, Will, as I have two teenage boys who will begin driving soon. What that boy has been through is just so sad.

They've begun to share their story and their faith now. It was unbelievably remarkable to watch them. I sat in awe of their family, knowing the cross they are bearing, yet being able to use it for God's purpose in spite of that cross. They are an amazing family.

I watched an ABC's Good Morning America video clip of their family online, Good Morning America interview

Watch this video from the show last night. It left my jaw on the floor! It is just beautiful.

CNN video clip of Steven Curtis Chapman's family

Both when we have horribly bad times in our life, AND when we have bad days, or weeks, or months of just stinky days strung together, leaving us feeling very weary, God is always so good to show us *everything's going to be O.K.*, and to put everything into perspective for us, and helping us to find the blessings in each day, in spite of the stress and frustration.

Watching this family last night definitely put so many things into perspective for me this week, as I've had a time lately of "very stinky days", and times of great sadness in the passing away of my dad this month.

Watching the Chapman's last night has really helped me tremendously. I hope it blesses you as well, and that you soon find your days being less "stinky", and more full of joy.

hey I found something that offerred a bit of cheering up yesterday!

Of course, I came home to a constipated yelping poodle and a dead fish in the pond, but hey I've hard worse days!

Some other lady can have all the diamonds and fancy shoes, just give me books and coffee!

Although dh does occassionally note with longing that sometimes diamonds and fancy shoes might be cheaper and easier on him.
