Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was reading in Debra Bell's book, Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling, about Kathrybn Stout and some of her materials. Bell heavily recommends her Natural Spelling and Comprehenvise Composition; I was also looking at her Guides to History and her Movies as Literature which just looks fun.

Any advice or comments from you guys? Anyone use these? They're relatively inexpensive and span the years ... always a plus around here.

Mary,
I have had these (Natural Spelling and Comprehensive Comp) on my shelf for years and have never used them but I can answer any questions. Or even give them to you if you want.

My oldest dd was not much of a reader (would much rather be outside helping her dad with the cars or something ). Anyway, we Movies as Literature around 9th/10th grade. We really enjoyed it, and more importantly, she enjoyed it and learned from it. We watched the movies together, and then she completed all the writing/analyzing. We would often re-watch the movie pausing for discussion.

I've since sold the book but I remember especially enjoying Emma and Pride and Prejudice. Shane, too. Books she will probably never read on her own. For someone who doesn't care to read that type of material, I would highly recommend Movies as Literature. Plus it provides great mom/child time, but we're a family that enjoys the old, classic movies.

I think the books are good resources for someone who likes to pull together their own study while having some kind of scope and sequence to refer to. I personally think the Science Scope book would be especially helpful in designing a multi-level study for family-centered learning.

I have the spelling and composition books and they are helpful. We used the spelling lists for about half the year last year, then took a break. Now my DS 12 is up to par in spelling, so we're going more down the vocabulary development road. I may go back to using the lists w/DD9 and start using them w/DS 7. I actually haven't used the Composition book yet, but I'm currently working on a family-centered approach for language arts (aside from spelling/vocab). I'm looking at Elizabeth's Lively Language Lessons to design a family-centered study of grammar for one term, then I may try to do something with writing by learning about paragraphs then have the older kids get their feet wet with the 5-paragraph essay and some report writing.

I also have her Math book, but I haven't used that one either. We discovered Math-U-See somewhere along the way and have been really happy with that approach to learning math.

If you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to try to answer.

Valerie
