My 12 almost 13 year old daughter was just given three books by a friend--Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
I know nothing about these books--just wondering if anyone has any info. on these. She is very excited to start reading them, I'm not so sure about them.
Thanks for any advise.

My 15 yo dd looked into reading it on the advice of friends but in the end she didn't read it. She said it looked like a typical "secular teen novel" type of book so you might want to read it first.

Anxious to hear more.
I was at the bookstore a few days ago with my oldest dd (15) and she asked if she could read them. I was shocked she wanted to since her recent reading material has been Caddie Woodlawn, The Secret Garden, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, and some Roald Dahl books.

I didn't know what to answer since I haven't heard much about them. I told her to finish what she's now reading and let me check into them. She choose another book instead...

Maybe read them yourself first? I remember hearing that the film had a bit about virginity and premarital sex in it.....

Also -- one of the girls dies of leukemia -- we took 3 or 4 girls last summer to see it and they all came out boo-hooing  .
My 14 yod has read all the books and said they're ok, but there is a minimal sex scene in the 3trd book (she skipped it as soon as she saw what was going on).
The story is set in the midst of highschool and goes thru till the girls graduate and get ready to go off to college.
I don't think I'd have let her read it had I known -- but it kind of slipped in while she was at a "good Cahtolic school" last year  as "all the girls are reading it".

Hi,
I am usually a lurker on this site, but I felt that this question was calling out for my response -- so I finally joined!  . Anyway, I don't have teenagers yet, but I read these books when a niece told me about them. I can't recommend them for a anyone, but definately not a 12/13 year old. In the first book, one of the girls (soccer player) goes after a soccer coach at her soccer camp (I think she is 15 and he is 18 or older.) He tries to resist, but doesn't. It is not specifically stated, but it is understood that they have s*x. There are worse books, I'm sure, but I KNOW there are better books. I loved the Regina Doman books Black as Night and Shadow of the Bear for mature junior high and high school age. (If you do let her read the Traveling Pants books, I'd say you should read them also -- plenty to talk about with the girl's choices and priorities).

I only saw the movie so I can't say about the books. In the movie the sex is alot more than just implied if you get my meaning! The character does go on to regret her decision and talks about feeling empty afterwards. Her mother died recently so she is missing her mother's love and is looking for something to fill the void. I don't think they are the best books to read, but it could start some interesting mother/daughter discussions. It seems like the type of book my mom would have let me read them when I was a teen and then talked to me about all the "heavier aspects" after I finished.
Just my 2 cents.....
